Theme suggestion for freelance writer
-
Hello,
I hope this is an appropriate place to post this. My longtime WordPress theme, which I paid for, is no longer working, and I need to move to a new one. I’m looking for one that’s free, preferably (of course). I’m a freelance writer, and it’s a site for potential hirers to come and see my work, so I guess it’s a portfolio site I’m looking for — something where someone can click and go to a story I wrote. Just was wondering if anyone had any suggestions! Thanks.

Hi there,
I do not see any sites under your @au1984 WordPress.com account when I check on our end. You can confirm by visiting this page: https://wordpress.com/sites.
Is it possible you created your site under a different login? Is it the case that you are using another provider like GoDaddy, Bluehost, Hostgator, etc. instead? What is the URL of the site you are needing help with?
Happy to check in our system so we can take a closer look.

Yes, I use GoDaddy, and they say I need help from the theme provider, but I’m tired of paying $100 a year for theme support – and it’s probably time for a refresh anyway. I think the account is auburn84, but it won’t let me reset my password. URL (only partly functional) is byalecharvey.com.

Hi again,
Thanks for clarifying. To explain, we are not the only providers of WordPress sites, and GoDaddy also happens to offer WordPress sites, but they use a different version of the platform than what we use here. Because of this we are not able to help with your issue as it lies outside of our system. See http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ for more info.
If you wish, you can cancel with GoDaddy and migrate your site to us (instructions here) and from that point we would be able to help. However, as things stand now we are not able to offer assistance in this case.
As for access to your site with GoDaddy, the good news is that as long as you have access to the server control panel through your provider, it is always possible to regain access to your self-hosted WordPress site. This WordPress.org Codex article will walk you through it: http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
You can ask GoDaddy support for direct assistance in completing the steps in that article; they would be in the best position to help you regain access to byalecharvey.com.
Hope that points you in the right direction!

Yeah, I guess I’m not saying all of this correctly. Looking to start over with a new site. I was just looking for theme suggestions.

Hi there,
Theme choice is something very personal – it’s about what you like, and what looks and feels right for you, and without knowing a lot more about your tastes and the aesthetic you want for your site, it’s not really possible to suggest any specific theme.
You mention you want a portfolio to show case your work, so you can look at these themes that specifically has support for our portfolios feature:
https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/feature:portfolio/kokkiestrialtestdomain.com
Most of those themes were designed with the visual arts in mind, though, i.e. they’re designed to show off artist/illustrator and photography portfolios, and won’t really add much value to a writing portfolio.
So you can really use any theme – the portfolio feature works with all our themes, the ones above are just optimised for that feature. If you’re planning to create the new site with us, I recommend you look at our newer themes designed for the WordPress block editor. If you go to WordPress.com/themes those are the first 21 you’ll see. (You can also download any of our free themes to use on a WordPress site hosted somewhere else.)
But ultimately, look for one that feels right to you, and that has the features you think you’ll find useful for your site.
Please let me know if you have any more questions about this.

Thank you for such a thoughtful answer — it’s a big help, and I totally understand the personal preference aspect. I guess I just don’t know how I can be sure a theme has the functionality I need before I get it — specifically, I need to be sure I can link to my writing samples in some sort of spiffy, organized way. I guess that’s what I was thinking of when I said portfolio, but you’re right, most of those portfolio themes are visually arts oriented (that’s fine, too, if I can put a photo there and people can click on it to get to my story). I’ll keep looking and keep all of this in mind!

Hi @au1984, there are a bunch of ways to display your articles. If you’ve already got them sorted into tags and categories, look for a theme that handles those as you’d like them.
Note, too, if you’re using a free DYI installation of WordPress through GoDaddy, that will be different from our services. The theme repository for WordPress.org is on that site:
https://wordpress.org/themes/I’d recommend viewing some demos and what not to see what you like.
Going forward, you’ll also want to use the correct forums for self-managed installations, at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
Or, you’d be welcome to migrate your site to our services. You can find our pricing here:
