THeme Suggestion Needed
-
I have several wordpress blogs and I am considering using my main blog (link above) to highlight some of them–like a portal.
Is there a theme(s) that you can suggests that would particularly lend itself to featuring several blogs? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Not really – except maybe some premium (paid) theme (us volunteers aren’t familiar with premium themes).
Perhaps you can select any theme with rather large top nav tabs, and set those tabs to be links to the other blogs by creating a custom menu.
Or you can take the feed URLs of the other blogs and use them with the RSS widget in the sidebar (once for each blog).
Other prominent solutions would require HTML in a text widget or a static front page. As an example, check this blog I’m helping set up:
http://pynchonguide.wordpress.com/
(The thumbnails are links to pages, but they could be links to other blogs instead, and they could be on the main page instead of the sidebar.) -
You can also achieve something similar (but less customizable) if you use the Image widget, or the Links widget with image links.
-
This was really helpful, thank you.
I was thinking the same thing about the tabs; however there doesn’t seem to be a search filter for tabs, unless I’m missing something?
I like your idea of the sidebar with links to the blogs and the way you did it on the blog you linked. -
You’re welcome!
Themes with a top nav menu listed here:

Then you can see them in action here:

oh, this is helpful, thanks!
in reading the post you recommended, and other linked ones, i noticed something about featuring posts on a page; is there any chance i could feature posts from more than one WP blog on a page?

There is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages.
We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. Although there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance we have done so by creating a custom menu. In that custom menu you will be displaying Categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation to achieve what you want.
These are the how-to instructions:
1. You create a custom menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
2. You add the Categories you want to display and arrange them in the order you want.
3. Then you add and drop and drag the sub-categories below the appropriate Categories, and when you have everything arranged in the menu that you want you save the menu.
4. Go to the “theme location” module at upper left on the menu page. Select your custom menu name from the pull-down labeled “primary location.” Click the save button in that module.
Note: If you wish you can also include pages and sub-pages of your own choice and custom links in your custom menu as well.

Wow, I think I need a nap before I take this next step, but thank you…
One other simpler question (i think)
My “home” page shows my most recent posts; is there a way to change my built in home page to be static like other pages?
-
You can set a static front page rather than depicting your posts on it if you wish. If that’s the case then you will also need to create a static page for posts to appear on.
Create pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/Create static front page > Settings > Reading
Front page displays__Your latest posts
__A static page (select below)
Front page:
Posts page:For example you can create a “Welcome” page as your front page and a “Blogs” page for your posts. However, consider this very carefully. Blog readers come to blogs to read the most recent published content in your posts. How will returning visitors respond to ending up on that same Welcome page each and every time they arrive, and then having to click a tab for Blogs?
-
Thank you for adding the considerations I should make first.
Which leads me to ask this other question again, in case I didn’t ask it correctly—is there a way to show most recent published content from my other WP blogs on a single blog’s home page or other page?
-
I’ve already given you that option in my first reply: the only way to do it is take the feed URLs of the other blogs and use them with the RSS widget in the sidebar.
-
Unfortunately, that sounds great, but makes my brain shut down. If you had the time/patience, could you break it down for me?
For starters I’m not sure about what the “feed” URLs.
I imagine I can look for the RSS widget simply enough.
ANything else I need to know?
Thanks again! I’ve already made a lot of changes on my blog today with all of this support!

Start with this:

If it isn’t enough, let me know! -
perfect place for me to start, thank you!
i’m sorry i didn’t think of that…and is there a difference between these two widgets in terms of what I want to achieve?
