Theme Suggestions for Blogs with Thousands of Comments

A few of my postings have become fairly well trafficked. I’ve used the Connections theme since the blog’s inception. I recently switched to a new theme because I thought Connections was bugging out — it wasn’t — but, several commenters said the new theme made reading comments easier.

So, from the feedback I’m gathering, reading/commenting via the Connections theme was annoying. The new theme I’m trying out — Twenty Eleven — is well received but the comments aren’t numbered and this is a must. Is there a WordPress Theme — preferably free — that is well known to be good for blog postings with a lot of comments?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

And, I apologize if this question wasn’t posted in the correct area…I’m not too familiar with WP forums.

Hi there, I use the Twenty Eleven themes and it has a comment bubble that indicates how many comments have been receieved on a post. Is that what you mean by “numbered comments”? I’m also smiling in a friendly way at your optimistic outlook because your blog is an emerging blog that does not get thousands of comments.

Either of these postings has over 2,000 comments…

I’m looking for a theme where the comments are numbered. So, for example, the 465th comment can be somebody referencing the 15th comment. They’d say something like…

“In comment #15, John Doe says… bla, bla, bla. In response, yada, yada, yada.”

A reply is usually sufficient but there have been occasions — especially with the above two postings — where replies to comments are capped and can’t be exceeded.

You might find more about comment display by live previewing themes in your Dashboard, but if you are using nested comments (which some find annoying) it usually is clear who is replying to whom. See “other comment settings” here

I’ve used live preview. That’s how I settled on Twenty Eleven. However, it doesn’t have numbered comments. So, I’m looking for a different theme but I definitely don’t have the attention span to preview every theme.

My question is basically… Is there a theme that’s known to be best for blogs with a lot of comments?

As for the comment/discussion settings, they’re like french to me. Talk about a page that desperately needs to be updated into plain English. Regardless, with my blog, it’s clear who is replying to who until the maximum number of replies is reached. Once that happens, people like to cite the comment number. The Connections theme numbered the comment (but Twenty Eleven doesn’t).

I do believe that all themes have a permalink in the comment reply and that can be referenced, but apparently numbered comments isn’t popular enough for WordPress.com to give it its own “feature filter” in the Theme Showcase here http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/

I am sorry I have no further suggestions for you. Perhaps one of the other forum volunteers can assist.

    Agreed.
