Here is your theme description page link https://wordpress.com/themes/orvis/ and it has set-up instructions as well as image dimensions.
“People love full-size images of your work, so make sure any images you include are at least 924px wide. “
“Featured Images
Featured Images https://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/ are important in Orvis. They work best when they’re at least 924px wide and will appear in several places, including archive pages, the portfolio page template, and whenever you use portfolio shortcodes. Don’t forget to add one to your projects!”“Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels)

thanks for the reply. The issue however is that I choose a template which is a full width slideshow and when I click to test it, it comes up with a menu to the side of it with categories etc instead of being the nice full width picture slideshow on the template I chose.
I’ve half designed on Wix and half designed on Weebly but ideally wanted to use WordPress. It seems as though it’s too hard. I wonder if there are web designers out there who could help me with the set up but then I could host it myself. -
