Theme width differs from gallery view?
-
1. Have searched forums etc., but not finding info on this issue thusfar
2. Am aware of custom CSS upgradeAm confused about the width of themes as I preview them (click on them, but not clicking “Activate”). Currently I’m using Connections, which is great and near perfect — just much too narrow.
Looking thru the gallery I saw several other options that appeared to be great alternatives when I click on them in the gallery, for example BLIX or Contempt, or eFleur De Lys… all have previews that appear to have nice wide main post/text areas.
Only when I preview/activate those nice wide themes, my blog’s width is nothing even close to the width of the thumbnail.
Am I doing something wrong?

This FAQ is a good starting point as it shows the maximum image width that can be put into the post area: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/25/how-big-can-my-images-be/ . A few themes are missing, but most are there.

LOL… noooooooooooooooooooo LOLOLOL.
Not width of **MY** images, I’m comfortable width resizing them, optimize, etc. etc.
What I’m asking about (sorry for confusion!) is the width of the *Wordpress* theme gallery images. I keep trying to select one of the many fixed width themes, yet several that I have selected APPEAR to be nice and wide, but once selected they are somehow very narrow.
Here’s what I mean.
Go to blog Dashboard / Appearance / Themes. Now take a look at the thumnail image of say… Fleur De Lys. See how wide the text area appears to be in the thumbnail? Looks like it’s a nice wide theme, right?
Now click “PREVIEW”…. poof! That seemingly nice wide theme really isn’t — it’s narrow and skinny just like Connections, (which I’m already using and love, other than the width).
Makes more sense now, what I’m asking? ?
I’m just wondering if there is some setting that I’ve missed somewhere because there are sooooo many nice fixed width themes that appear to be plenty wide — until you actually preview them. So I’m hoping there’s something I can do (other than purchase CSS) to have those pretty fixed width themes show up as wide as they are in the thumbnail view.

Yes I know, but there is probably not a lot that will be done about the preview. What I was giving you was an FAQ that lists the width of the post areas which you could then use as a guide to which themes have the widest post areas, and are therefore wide themes in general. It gives you a starting point when looking for wider themes.

Even the CSS upgrade would not do you any good because we cannot edit the CSS on the dashboard. With the dashboard, what you see is what we have.

@angiemel: The link tsp originally gave you is the real info on how wide the post area of each theme is. What you have in the pages under Appearance>Themes is just snapshots, not necessarily in proportion to one another and not necessarily of complete identical screens. (Check the Freshy thumbnail, for instance: just its upper left corner.)

Grooveness. Thanks you guys.
Headed now over to the CSS forum to figure out why the heck the width changes I’m making to the Connections theme are leaving out the cool “shadow” effect.
