Theme with long support lifespan?

    Is there any way to tell/guess which free theme is going to be maintained for a long time? I heard of themes that get abandoned and stopped receiving updates.

    Currently I settled on the twenty seventeen. It is the official theme from wordpress.org, so it would be maintained for many many years. I assume.

    What is the official word on this?

    Normally theme development and maintenance is done on a long-term. Primarily the lifetime of a theme depends on the challenges involved in development and users’ interests.

    This is my perspective of what drives the official theme development.

    For an official word from Automattic though, here is what I am doing. I am adding a modlook tag in this thread for the staff’s attention. Someone should clarify things for you and how long Twenty Seventeen might be available.

    Hi @nwedit, feel free to pick a newer theme, as you’ve done. You’re also welcome to pick any of the themes that have a “2” in their name — these are older themes that were popular enough we’ve redone them to add more features. They’re likely to stick around for a while.

    Also, just to clarify, we do typically apply any necessary patches to retired themes. We just stop offering them in our showcase and encourage users to switch to an updated theme when possible.
