Theme With Table Of Contents

    Hi all,

I’m hoping someone might be able to suggest a theme which has a Table Of Contents feature.

(I’m a Premium level user, and thus can’t install plugins.)

Ideally I’d like to have a page for each category which lists all the articles in that category. Just a linked title for each article would be enough.

I can do this manually by creating and updating pages for each category, but before I do that I thought I’d see if it can be done automatically by some theme.

    Many thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Ideally I’d like to have a page for each category which lists all the articles in that category. Just a linked title for each article would be enough.

While there may be some themes that display, by default, only the titles of posts on the blog page, category pages, and other archives pages, I don’t recall any at the moment and I don’t know if there’s a filter available that would accurately pick them out at the themes showcase. In any case, limiting the display of just post titles to only category pages (and not all archive pages) might be a little tricky.

Alternatively, you may create link lists of posts such as you’ve described withDisplay Posts Shortcode , regardless of the theme applied to the site. The shortcode may be inserted into a static page, and you may customize the shortcode to display only posts in a single category (see the Display Arguments section of the Display Posts Shortcode support page). Lists created by display posts shortcode are automatically updated when relevant new posts are published. Links to such pages may added to a custom menu.

You may also provide link lists of posts in certain categories in a custom menu, displayed as drop-down menus under the corresponding categories. See the Reorder Menu Items & Add Drop-Down Menus section of the Custom Menus support page.

  • Hi there,

No theme has a table of contents feature that lists all posts. The Display Posts shortcode that @musicdoc1 reference above is the only automatic way to do this, though you should note that the shortcode will only display up to a 100 posts, and it’s cache, so it can take up to an hour after you publish a new post before it will update in the page using the shortcode.

Guys, many thanks for the tips. Shortcode does sound like what I need, so I’ll get to work learning that.

Thanks for the mention of the 100 post limit. It will be awhile until that’s an issue, but it’s good to know for the future.

If all else fails it would only take a minute to add a new article to an article list, so I suppose I’m overthinking this.

    Thanks again!

Got the shortcode up, and just wanted to post again to applaud the simplicity of it. Yea, yahoo, whoopee, and various other relevant exclamations. Like it.

  • Happy to hear that you’ve got this sorted. Don’t be shy if you have any other questions in the future. We stick close by!

You do indeed stick close by. I’ve been impressed with how fast questions are answered in support chats. I’m in and out in a minute. You know, in comparison to most hosts where you submit a ticket and then wait a day or two for response.

  • Appreciate the kind words. I’ll pass those on to the team :)
