Remember taking Polaroid photos with your SX-70 camera back in the 1970s ? Wait, what ? Nobody working there was EVEN ALIVE back in the 1970s ? Oh…never mind ! But wait…I am sure you DO know how popular it became in recent years to SIMULATE the charm, the “retro” look, the “old school” nature of those old Polaroid pics with the many camera apps that exist today – – or the various ways to reproduce the look in Adobe Photoshop ! And then along came the IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT, which “took it to a new level”, by finally succeeding, against long odds, to re-formulate the chemical process invented by Land. They are even refurbishing old Polaroid instant cameras for a new, young, market, which has a taste for, and sees value in, that old “retro” style.
But that’s a trip down memory lane. Let’s turn our attention to today….and the WordPress theme library. Remember all those old, classic, “retro”, “old school” themes, like Treba, Emire, Ambiru (all lovingly handcrafted by Phu Ly), Misty Look, Ocean Mist, etc. ? What a charming throwback to the early days of blogging they were ! Were they “responsive” ? Hell no ! Were they optimized for mobile ? [expletive deleted] mobile ! There were the “Polaroids” of WordPress Themes ! And we loved them.
Now, the theme library currently has lots and lots of nice choices. Particularly a lot of new, “premium” themes ! But here’s my vote – – for a celebration sometime soon of “oldies week”. It should go something like this: “Back, by (popular ?) demand, for a stroll down memory lane, for a limited time only ! The narrow, kinda hokey (just like a Polaroid), but incredibly charming Treba Theme ! Or: “Up from the misty depths of time and space, its the Misty Look Theme (waaaaaay more charming than Misty Lake). Or: “Feast your eyes on one of the most elegantly beautiful themes ever created, Ocean Mist”.
Think about it. Bringing a few back – – even if you have to do a bit of work on them – – is surely not as challenging as the Impossible Project. And then WordPress can be responsive and mobile optimized, AND be super-cool, old school, and “retro” as well.
The End.

It’s an interesting idea. I’ll pass it along to the theme team.
However, I wouldn’t be surprised if the amount of work required to update many of those themes makes it a no-go.

Thanks Rootjosh, for the quick reply, and for passing it along to the theme development folks.
Heck, I will be happy if it is just ONE of those old themes…maybe Ocean Mist. I will keep my fingers crossed, but I know that there are many, many more pressing things for them to do.It may take a few more years to pass before “retro” is a desirable thing for themes ! I am also glad I didn’t get flamed for such a long and silly post (and for teasing you guys a bit) ! Best regards.
