Themes

I wanted to test a theme, and was unable to get back to the original. How can I restore the previous theme?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Thanks, Galois.
The original theme was twenty sixteen, but now when “restored”, the sidebar is missing, among other things. It did not go back to where it was.

  • Hi @davidallanvan!

Sometimes when changing themes things can be moved around a bit, as the theme you’re switching to might not have the same places for widgets and other items to go.

If that happens, your widgets will move to an Inactive state. Here’s a link where you can find them again:
    https://davidallanvancom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

Down on the bottom you’ll see the inactive items. You can drag them back into place after the theme switch :)

Also, when switching themes, it’s recommended to use My Site > Themes, instead of the WP Admin version :)

Thanks, Chad. The link you sent worked great. But I’m not clear on My Site vs. WP Admin. Also, do you offer remote tutoring?

  • My Site is a newer interface that’s taking the place of WP Admin. There are still some items, like Inactive Widgets, that haven’t made the move over to the new system yet.

I’m not sure what you mean by remote tutoring, but WordPress.com Plans all include access to live chat support:
    https://WordPress.com/plans

Is that what you had in mind?

I meant a session that I pay for where I talk with someone and get my list of questions asked while getting help converting my site and making changes. BlueHost had this for a while, but stopped. It was an hour one-on-one for $79 and very useful.

I made the changes as per your instructions and the link. The widgets were there, and I made some changes to them. When I click Manage With Live Preview, I can see the changes. But Live Preview opens an months-old page, not the new one.

And when I go to the site, I still don’t see any sidebar at all – yes, I refreshed the page.

FYI, when I made changes, I didn’t see any link to click to update or save.

    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    David

    Ah, okay understood :)

Paid one one one sessions aren’t something that is currently available, but the live chat support I mentioned under the annual plans can be helpful in a similar way :)

Your opening post lists the site you needed help with as davidallanvancom.wordpress.com. Are you actually working on letstakeacloserlook.com?

If so, you’ll need to go into the admin dashboard for that site (you might be editing one site, and looking for changes on the other).

letstakeacloserlook.com is a self hosted WordPress site that you’ve connected to your WordPress.com account. You should see a WP Admin link in the bottom left corner of your WordPress account that will take you to the admin dashboard for your site. From there look under Appearance > Widgets for the section we’ve been discussing.

If you are working on letstakeacloserlook.com, you’ll want to post over on http://WordPress.org/support in the future – because it’s a self hosted WordPress site, it’s a little different from the WordPress.com hosted sites this forum is geared towards :)

Let me know if logging in to your other site’s dashboard as I’ve described above helps solve the problem :)
