Themes

I have installed a new free theme on my site and found out I can’t even change the styles without a paid plan.
Wordpress.com used to offer at least some decent options. Now, they don’t even provide the bare minimum because they want you to pay. I feel like wordpress.com has just been getting worse.
What’s your experience? Have you considered moving your site to another platform?

Hi there,
It’s true that WordPress.com has evolved over the years, and we continually update our services to better meet the needs of our diverse user base. Our Free plan is indeed designed to provide basic features which are sufficient for a blog or a simple website. It includes access to a range of free themes and essential design tools. And remember, all these features come at no cost at all.
When considering the alternatives, it’s important to remember that even if you were to use the free WordPress software on a different host, there would still be associated costs. Hosting plans aren’t free and may also come with additional responsibilities like site maintenance, security, and dealing with potential technical issues.
For more advanced features or tools, we have created our paid plans. Not only do these plans allow for more customization, including theme and CSS changes, but they also offer additional benefits. For example, monetization tools to potentially generate income from your site, a free domain for one year, removal of WordPress.com ads, and increased storage space. Most importantly, our paid plans come with direct access to our email and live chat support.
We strive to ensure that our plans offer great value for the features and benefits they provide. But we do appreciate feedback and take the opinions of our users very seriously. I hope this helps to clarify things a bit. If you have any more questions or need further guidance, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Hello,
here’s the issue. You’re making the free product unusable compared to a few years ago. You should help creators make their websites profitable so they actually have an incentive to upgrade to a paid plan, not ruin the free option and tell people to give you money so as to get the bare minimum. My website has ads on, so WordPress.com is making money from it and I think it pays for itself at least.
Look at what YouTube does. It actually helps content creators.
Your free themes do not have even the most basic cutomization options which used to be common until recently. You’re asking me to pay you just to change the fonts and the colours? Do you really think it’s worth it?
When you mention other available options on the internet, please tell your superiors that there are websites like substack and medium. What’s the reason for content creators to choose wordpress.com instead of substack and medium?
My website was doing great and was ranked very high on Google search, just below Wikipedia for some keywords. But you are not even optimizing themes to make them comply with Google’s CWV. My website fails the CWV tests and it has been deprioritized. That’s not my own fault because I can barely change the themes. It’s the themes themselves that perform poorly.
Indeed, I started a substack newsletter instead of launching a wordpress.com site for a different project.
WordPress.com has enormous potential, but instead of taking a page from the YouTube playbook, you’re just antagonizing independent creators. Your themes are getting unusable, worse than they were a decade ago. I really just don’t understand why so many companies see the mutually beneficial relationship between YouTube and content creators, and then stubbornly choose to do the exact opposite!
