  I clicked on Contact Us yet this form goes to a public forum – not exactly help from wordpress! I chose a theme from the menu. The selection box showed the main image stretching across the whole width of the page. When applied to my site it was simply an image with a large area of blank space – ie: nothing like the original image shown.

  You are trying to set up your homepage to be similar to what you see here in the “theme demo” yes? https://wordpress.com/theme/exford

  When you activate a theme it may not have this homepage starter template loaded by default, but you can add it to your site by creating a new page (usually you will title this your “Home” page) and then following the steps in this video to load the Exford homepage template:
