If you go to Appearance, then Themes, while in your Dashboard, you can “window-shop” through all the themes and see which ones catch your eye. Then you can Preview to see what your existing blog would look like in that Theme — before making a commitment to using the theme. You can also “Filter” the various themes by # of columns you would like, whether or not you want right or left (or both) sidebars, whether you want a custom header picture, light or dark background, etc. There are more than a hundred themes, but usually there are a handful or so that will grab your attention right off the bat. Have fun!

Inuit types might be one to look at as well since it has the ability to put the posts into two columns on the main blog page. It also has a “featured” post feature where you can set your latest two postsSee here for an example: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com .
You might want to perhaps set up a test blog and then play with the theme options on Inuit types and also play with DePo as Raincoaster suggests.

And actually I just noticed that you can set the number of “featured” posts to more than two.
-
Under the Influence also lets you split posts into two columns with an extra column for the sidebar too so have a look and compare it to the other options.

Themes found on the internet are for self-hosted wordpress blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG. Our software here at wordpress.COM is different. We cannot add themes at wordpress.COM; we are limited to the themes found in the dashboard under Appearance > Themes
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/CSS at wordpress.COM is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.
