THEMES MISSING – MORE THAN A HUNDRED for this web address; also: a "help" prank

  • Unknown's avatar

    1. This WP experience is actually a distressing situation for me: I have only 93 free themes in my newly-created (today/Dec. 16, 2017) blog (as indicated in the above blog address). I think there must be 220++ free themes and together with premium themes, around 440 total (?). For every website I create, there are lesser and lesser themes available; the newer the site title (even the renamed blogs had the number of themes reduced!), the lesser the number, which is odd of my WordPress account.

I would like to fix this/would like the FULL RESTORATION of ALL the free themes and ALL the premium themes AVAILABLE TO USERS (ever) for this newest site (if possible) (this site/web address will be the test, and I may or may not ask for full restoration of themes in my other sites). Hopefully, the numbers will inform me really JUST HOW MANY free and premium themes there are ACTUALLY in TOTAL on WordPress.com (because this true information is not available to me at present). Thanks.

    2. Another problem/FORMAL COMPLAINT (Please DO NOT restrict the kinds of help I may need nor of complaints lodged officially, especially if it revolves around TRUE mistreatment and abuse by a “volunteer”, as in the following. Thank you!) :

Note that I would like to be helped by a real Happiness Engineer because the last time I asked help, a peer user/volunteer came along to “help”; she did the following: After SCOLDING me FOR HAVING WP PROBLEMS with my sites, as if they were my fault, she GAVE ME LINKS (“You can find information here, here and here” {-linked}) and then left – but ALL three links led to me being signed out of my account. I clicked all three {and clicked a few extra times}, just to be sure. (a prank from her, to someone clueless and asking for help)

Yes, LET IT BE ON RECORD that I’m also FORMALLY complaining about these so-called experienced peer “users/volunteers”, in particular, this person that I mention (some details are written below). I mention too that in general, such is not an uncommon experience anywhere we may be, no matter how positive and productive we want to be; the point being screening of volunteers should be tighter or expulsion from the volunteer program is mandatory if they are abusive. (They actually CAN do these negative and non-productive things to forum posters BECAUSE these volunteers are under no legal obligation to truly help whatsoever; therefore, what’s stopping them? Nothing.)

Regarding specifics of this formal complaint (on the person in question): Her name in those days had the word “Tiger” on it (WhiteTiger, was it?), (she’ll probably change that for fear of being discovered here) and FOR THE RECORD: She never helped me (apart from that negative encounter). My complaint on the functionality of links of users’ names and other issues in my sites languished for weeks, until a real Happiness Engineer noticed the unresolved WP-site-problem thread and truly helped me with my issues back then.

Should a volunteer help me (I will take note of your name), I hope there are no pranks this time or I’ll report you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

My username is timethief. I am a Volunteer and I have answered questions here for over 11 years.

Will you please confirm the exact URL of the site you are referring to here by typing it into a comment box?

I am asking because http://bloggingfairy.wordpress.com/ is linked to your username but is a site devoid of any blogger created content. Also http://attentionlazada.wordpress.com/ has a single published post.

This thread has been tagged with modlook for Staff assistance. While you are waiting perhaps this is a retired theme issue that I may be able to help you with.

Themes are retired when they no longer support all WordPress.COM features and the recommendation is to switch to using a newer theme.

One can continue to use a retired theme on any site that has previously used it, however, retired themes are not available for use on new sites registered after the retirement of the theme.

https://bloggingfairy.wordpress.com/ is wearing the Twenty Fifteen theme https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyfifteen which has not been retired.

http://attentionlazada.wordpress.com/ is wearing the Penscratch 2 theme https://wordpress.com/theme/penscratch-2 and it appears you have typed a post into the header area of the theme.

The original Penscratch theme https://wordpress.com/theme/penscratch is the forerunner of Penscratch 2 and that original theme has been retired therefore it is not available for use on any site registered after it was retired.

There does seem to be some inconsistency to the total number of themes available depending on how much clicking you are prepared to do. If I go to https://wordpress.com/themes it states there are 294 themes available. If I click on “free” it shows 93 and “premium” shows 201.
But if I then click on “free” again there are suddenly 133 themes available and clicking “all” again now a total of 334. Clicking “new” and then “all” the total became sometimes 341, 363 even 398. I guess it depends how many thumbnail images of the themes are loading each time.
Looking at themes via the My Sites dashboard I initially too saw 93 free themes. Clicking again “all” became 303, “free” became 114 and “premium” became 202 which doesn’t even add up? Refreshing either via a search engine or My Sites always reverted to the lower totals too.

  • @000womanpublishing000 I want to note you can ask for staff help with the “modlook” tag anytime. If you’ll let us know which specific thread you had trouble with, we’ll take a look.

I do know we occasionally retire some themes, and won’t be re-adding them because they don’t support all of the features we have now. But it sounds from @themagicrobot’s comments like there might be another issue.

@themagicrobot do you get those changes in numbers regardless of which site you have selected?

Good morning from here – Ya’ll can see the number of themes issue on the Themes Showcase page even when logged out. 93 free themes and 201 Premium themes. The numbers change as you click back and forth between all, free and premium. But the numbers will reset if you refresh the page. I believe this is a known issue and has been reported by Staff earlier on Github/Calypso.

Just adding to what has been said above about retired themes: whenever you register a brand new site on WordPressdotcom, that new site will only have access to the currently available themes. Sites that were created prior to a theme retiring will still have access (for now) to a retired theme through WP Admin>Appearance>Themes. The number of themes there depends on when that site was created, so you may see differing numbers there across however many websites you have.

Regarding your second issue/complaint, all WordPressdotcom users are held to our community standards when posting here in our forums and anyone volunteering their time to answer questions is also subject to those standards. If you encounter someone who is violating our community standards, please, as @supernovia said, add the MODLOOK tag to the Tags section of the forum thread sidebar to bring the thread to the attention of Staff.

  • We’re just about to update those standards too to make them clearer and more concise.

You’re right re: the numbers changing even in na incognito window. I’ll send that to our theme folks to take a look.
