themes not available

Hi, I am completely new to WordPress having used Webplus to run my site for years. Thought it was about time I brough myself into the 21st century ;-) Having said that I am having a little trouble. I have managed to publish my wordpress build on my own hosting package but am unable te any options anywhere on my dashboard for adding themes and plug ins. I really want to use the buddy press plugin and the custom community theme. Can you help please. James

I’m afraid that both plugins and themes can’t be uploaded to sites hosted on WordPress.com. They can only be uploaded to self-hosted blogs running on WordPress.org software. You can read more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org here:

Hi, great reply , thanks. However Im going to be really dumb!! Sorry. Can I use my own domain wavelengthuk.com on the .org site?

That’s not dumb at all, not to worry!
You can indeed use your own domain. All you’ll need to do is set up hosting with some third party hosting company (whichever one you’d like, from GoDaddy through to Rackspace or anything in between) and once you have done so, they will give you the nameservers of your new hosting account.
When they do, you’ll just need to log in to your domain registrar’s account and change the nameservers away from WordPress.com’s and over to the new company’s. It’ll take a couple of hours, but your hosting with your domain will be up and running great.
