Themes ranked by popularity
-
Is there a way to see a listing of all WordPress.com themes ranked by popularity (i.e. popularity among WordPress bloggers), preferably filtered to free themes?
-
I have been here for nearly 10 years, have tried nearly every free theme out, and have never been provided with an opportunity to enter a themes popularity vote.
See here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/free/
And here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/premium/See also https://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/10/07/wordpress-com-themes-from-most-to-least-popular/

Thanks. The 2011 rankings (by number of adopters) are very interesting. A current version of those would be helpful.
It only occurred to me after posting my note that by selecting the “Popular” tab for Themes we may be seeing themes in their sequence of popularity among wordpress.com bloggers. Even if that’s the case, it would be helpful to also know the number of adopters and to have a single concise list in one place like the 2011 link you provide. Thanks for the links.

The link I gave you to https://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/10/07/wordpress-com-themes-from-most-to-least-popular/ reflected the work that was done by another blogger, not by Staff.
There are no numbers made available to us users with regard to thme preference.

Why are you asking this question? Are you looking for blog fodder that you intend to publish?
The popularity of themes changes frequently and we even have people using the Kubrick theme ie. the original default theme that has been retired. Themes are retired when they no longer support all wordpresds.com features and can be used only on sites that they are currently being used on or have been used on in the past.
Once again another blogger and Volunteer here has published a retired themes list at https://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2013/08/09/happy-retirement/
The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
Read: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Be sure to read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
None of the wordpress.com themes (retired or otherwise) can be moved to a site hosted outside of wordpress.com Most of the themes we run here on WordPress.com are also available in the WordPress.org themes directory: http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

Very helpful information as I’m new to WordPress. As for “why”, I’m about to launch a blog and am shopping around for themes. Many thanks.

The best way to search for themes is to state what you features you want up front, then I can cut to the chase and make suggestions.
-
Hi timethief. I’ll definitely take you up on your offer. I’d state the features I want now except that I’d like to study a little more to see what the state of the art is. Then I’ll be able to choose better. I’ll start by poring over your One Cool Site. Looks like a great resource.
To date, I’m preparing my site (NavigatingComplexity.net) with Sunspot. I’m aiming there for blog content on the left with a single right sidebar. The header’s not working yet though. I’m going to browse themes more before committing to one.
Many thanks again for your help.

Each theme’s popularity ranking is noted on its older showcase page, for example:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentysixteen/
“Our 271st most popular theme.”
We don’t have one view compiling all those numbers, though. :)
-
Just noting that from time to time that ranking “our XXX most popular theme” seems to fall off the theme showcase pages.
It’s also possible to sort themes in the old theme showcase by “popular”
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/popular/ starting from most to least popular. -

You are probably looking at the newer showcase when that happens, as the ranking is not included there. For example:

@kathrynwp – Ah, could be. :) That would also explain the “missing” Likes, which I regularly use.
