Themes with Vertical Header Images?
-
I am using the Bushwick theme, which I like. It was practically the only one I found where a vertical ‘header’ (actually left-side) image works. The theme with its large headline type is well-suited for substantial posts, which I fancy some of mine are.
However, I would also like to post smaller, ‘magazine-style’ posts, snippets, comments, quotations, occasional photos, etc. So I am wondering whether there are other themes that support a vertical (left-side) header, but are more flexible for a ‘magazine’ style blog, that might have minor and major features.
Suggestions? I’d prefer a free theme, if possible.

I don’t know of any themes that would fit your requirement but I hope if you take a look in the theme directory, https://theme.wordpress.com/ , you may find some themes fitting your criteria.

Thanks for the response, chaitanyamsv.
I have looked through a lot of the themes that might fit my header image; only one I’ve found so far is Largo (not free). There are many that say they support a ‘custom header’, but I can’t tell if customization includes a vertical header. Does it?
Still looking for suggestions. . .

No. :-) A theme designed for a horizontal header doesn’t provide the option for a vertical header as well – the theme needs to be designed that way from the start. As you’ve found, vertical headers are quite rare so there isn’t a wide choice of themes.
Twenty Fifteen actually comes with a vertical header – have you given it a look? It’s not shown in the demo, but the header is displayed as a backdrop under the left sidebar:

Thanks for the response, Kathryn. I tried Twenty Fifteen briefly. While I like the typography more than Bushwick’s, and it does have a space for a vertical header, the space is narrower than Bushwick’s, and the overprinting menus make it look cluttered.
I suppose I could customize Bushwick some (typography and colors), but it looks like that requires a monthly fee. Can’t justify that for a very small blog at this point.
Any other suggestions occur to you, please let me know.

I will definitely keep you posted if I think of another suitable theme.

You can now change fonts on any theme without an upgrade, we’ve added about 30 free Google fonts – something to explore.

Thanks, Kathryn– I did pick a different font. That was very helpful.
Now if I could just get rid of the awful pastel fuchsia the headline type is in. . .
How about a few non-premium options for color?

Glad you like your new font! Regarding colours, we are always adding new features, so you never know. Some themes do come with free featured colour palettes – Twenty Fifteen is one of them.
For what it’s worth, that colour does not look fuschia on my screens – more of a dark dusty rose. :)

Thanks again– ‘Dusty Rose’ is a much more appealing name than ‘Fuschia’. Could be a country singer!
Heh. Indeed.
PS While I’ve got you, no one has answered my question about embedding an audio clip: why doesn’t it work? See HERE. Any idea?
I specialize in theme issues, but I’ve marked your other thread with the modlook tag so a Happiness Engineer will be along to help. You can always add that tag yourself if you need staff assistance on a thread.
