    I can’t login to wordpress, all I see is: There has been a critical error on this website.
    When googling this error, it looks like you’re supposed to receive an email with further details and a recovery link but I’ve not received this (even checked junk mail). So I can’t get into my site to try and fix it.

    Hi there,

    This is WordPress.com forum, It seems like your website is using the open source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) which is hosted elsewhere rather than WordPress.com. To avoid confusion about WordPress.com vs WordPress.org please know the differences from here https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

    However, I can see that you have solved the issue already as your website is loading without any error. :)

    For general discussion about open source software, you can  find community advice here https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ where you’ll find more experts who are using the same software as you to provide help.

    Oh, so sorry I hadn’t realised there was two kinds! Thank you for explaining. I’ll repost my question there. I can see my website, but the homepage is displaying as a VERY old version and I can’t login to wordpress to edit it.
