There is a way to symbolize public domain?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello. I inserted public domain images on my blog and want to add it’s symbol on the caption, so the copyright status is clearer. It’s a © slashed. I could not find it by searching on Google. There is a character to this, or will I need to add it’s as image to my caption?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Since noone could answer my question, I tagged this to mod look.

    @kixty9:

    You could try using the following:
    <s>©</s>

    That should produce the copyright symbol with a line through it. But there isn’t a proper ‘public domain’ symbol available in unicode as far as I know.

    The problem is that I don’t want it horizontally slashed, but on the diagonal. OK. So I will need to simply say “PD” (public domain”).

    There is a way to express Creative Commons licenses other than, for example, “CC-BY-SA 3.0”?

    I’m not aware of any other way, but I’d recommend reaching out to them about this:
    http://creativecommons.org/

    I don’t see anything wrong personally in referring to these, in your captions or elsewhere, as “Public Domain” or “Creative Commons”. As a reader, I feel I’d have a clearer understanding of these, rather than rarely used symbols or abbreviations.

    I’m not planning to simply throw abbreviations there, even because my blog is in Portuguese, so “PD” and “CC-BY-SA 3.0” are even more incomprehensible than in English.

    If I leave my readers to guess the meaning by themselves, the result can be catastrophic, because “PD” and “CC” can mean ‘something’ sexual and ‘something’ smelly in popular language.

    I plan to add an “abbr” tag explaining the abbreviation. First in English, so the abbreviation make sense, and after in Portuguese, so the reader who can’t understand English can know what it is. In the case of Creative Commons, I can link to the respective page of the license, too.

    OK, I’ve tested and decided to use the Creative Commons compact license for the image captions, and the Creative Commons full logo for the blog text.
