There are custom characters you can use found in the Visual editor Row 2 icon 7. See here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#custom-characters The degree symbol is in the middle of the 4th row there.

    ° symbol:
    from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degree_symbol

With Microsoft Windows, there are several ways to make the degree symbol:

One can type Alt+248 or Alt+0176 – Note: The NumLock must be set first; on full size keyboards, the numeric keypad must be used; on laptops the virtual numeric keypad must be used. Note: Alt+0186 is often cited as the same degree symbol, but is actually a masculine ordinal indicator.
The Character Map tool also may be used to obtain a graphical menu of symbols.
The US-International English keyboard layout creates the degree symbol with AltGr+⇧ Shift+:

In the Mac OS operating system, the degree symbol can be entered by typing ⌥ Opt+⇧ Shift+8. One can also use the Mac OS character palette, which is available in many programs by selecting Special Characters from the Edit Menu, or from the Input Menu (flag) icon on the menu bar (enabled in the International section of the System Preferences).

    Thanks,Tess.
I figured using the special characters icons was the easiest way. It’s great that you expanded this for us.

Same info, just a different technique! The degree symbol is useful for a recipe blog like mine, so (on Mac) holding down two keys and typing “8” is really quick!

I thankyou for all the answers, just before posting the question I solved it the hard way, I opened Word, selected Insert Symbol, inserted the degree sign, selected and copied it, closed Word, no save and pasted into my blog. Thanks again, I have learned something.
But I still think that WordPress needs a basic strong>interactive tutorial instead of a raft of disconnected how to do it documents. For crying out loud, why use the word “strong” when they mean “bold” and why not show it boldfaced to me instead of displaying the wimpey codes? I guess it will show boldfaced after I submit it.

Good grief, I mucked around with that interactive and I must have destroyed the command somehow.

BTW I did know about the numeric keyboard method but couldn’t remember the digits. The Insert Symbol gives them to you but by the time you have got that far my way is about as quick. Is there a way of bringing up the Character Map in WordPress?
