There’s an error message popping up when

  • Hi there,

When I first created the site I always used with www in chrome (http) and the warning didn’t pop up, it’s only if it’s on edge (https) that when I use www the warning pops up, can you explain this?

This is normal. If someone types your URL with http://, http://www, or https:// it will all open at the https version. However, https://www will always give a warning, because it’s not possible to redirect that version to the non-www version.

However, the vast majority of internet users don’t type “https://” when typing a URL in a browser or a search engine, and modern browsers don’t require you to type that so there’s no reason to type that in manually.

The https://www version is not displayed anywhere on your site or indexed in any way by search engines. If you’ve been giving that version of the URL to people, then just stop doing that and it should no longer be a problem. You can give the www or non-www version – both will work – but there’s no need to include http/https in the URL you share with people.

Ps. I can control what I type but I can’t control what prospects type in the url, if my prospects type in www and see the warning sign it’s a HUGE concern and that’s what I’m trying to avoid.

I see no warnings when simply typing your address with www. I do see it when typing it with https://www, and that’s expected.

, I am aware of the various options but opted for the 1and1 deal so I asked 1and1, they said they can do the integration which is free of charge and all I need is the DNS settings details of my WP site, but I am unable to find it.

What 1and1 is trying to do is to set up a redirect with domain masking, which will cause your WordPress.com site to appear at your domain without it actually being mapped here. However, that causes several features on your site to break, and we do not support that method of connecting a domain to a WordPress.com site.

If you want to connect your custom domain to your WordPress.com site you will need one of our paid plans and the domain mapping upgrade as @themagicrobot explained above.

    Thank you.
I don’t type in or give out http or https in my url either but let’s say my prospect types in my website with www (even when I give without www as my friends did that and that’s how I found out this warning sign), on an edge browser then it automatically uses https thus the warning sign pops up. It’s great to learn that at least the search engine will not give that as an option, but is there absolutely nothing WordPress engineer can do to fix that problem with https since you explained the warning pops up as it’s not possible to redirect that version? I ask again, because my IT friend said otherwise and mentioned it’s something WP can fix.

When you say you do not support that method, but are we allowed to take the risk and let my domain provider do this or you mean “not support” as in WP doesn’t allow my domain provider to do this? If it’s the former, are you able to advise me where I can find the DNS setting details so I can test it out?

It shouldn’t. If someone types in your URL with www, we first redirect it to non-www and then redirect it to https, exactly so errors won’t happen. I tested this on Edge, typing http://www.wemanconnect.wordpress.com only, and it correctly redirected me to https://wemanconnect.wordpress.com/ without any errors at all. If you are seeing errors when doing this then the problem is somewhere else, but it’s not with your site.

We have no way to stop you from doing this, but we are not going to provide you with information to help you avoid paying us for a service that we do not provide for free.
