They are not allowing me to use the new editor. Is that because they want me to ‘upgrade’ and start paying monthly?

  Is this new editor free of charge. I have done wordpress for free for 5 years. Is this their way of charging me? By hitting the update button, what does that do?

  You can still switch to the classic editor when writing/editing posts/pages in your site’s Dashboard: https://wordpress.com/support/dashboard/
