Think and think again!

In a recent announcement made by the Maharashtra government it said that it plans to construct cycling tracks along the main roads within the city. This will be done in the ten leading cities of the state as a pilot project and if the results are encouraging then they will try these in the other places of Maharashtra as well.

A four member committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the state’s additional dgp (director general of police). It will come under the jurisdiction of the public work department which will be supervising the project.Pune, nagpur, nashik, amravati, chandrapur, kolhapur, solapur, latur, Aurangabad, jalgeon are the cities under this project which is named as ‘streets with cycle tracks’.

The idea of the state government is welcomed and appreciateable considering the growing problem of pollution and traffic in the cities. But the issue here is a similar project was initiated by the uttar Pradesh under the akhilesh yadav regime which he was inspired on his visit to Amsterdam and in March 2015,the first cycle track was inaugrated at kalidas Marg in Lucknow. It was further laid down in other parts of Lucknow, bareilly and some districts of Noida to conserve the environment and encourage people to use environment friendly methods to travel short distances within the city.

After the formation of the new Yogi government in 2017 it decided to dismantle these tracks giving the reason of traffic congestion, vendors occupying the area, used as parking by the vehicles, etc. The state’s urban development minister said,” We will demolish these bicycle tracks, which are unused and have caused traffic congestion. The demolition process will begin shortly.”

Here the Yogi government has undone what was done by the previous government and it might happen that the next government will undo what the Yogi sarkar will do and these probably will be the vicious cycle.

What is needed is a proper and detailed study of the project by experts before you give a green signal to any project and in this case the cycle project.crores of rupees are spent on construction of these tracks and it even causes temporary hassle for the masses and if there is no proper direction then the taxpayers money is misused which should not be the case.
