Thinking about the FAQ
-
Greets:
I’m hoping to get to a new FAQ for the forums here sometime this week. What seems to be the most asked questions asked around here?
*chuckle* I already have the “Am I in the right site?” one. :)

(1) We need to cover the basic resources (again) so we can help folks become self-sufficient as soon as possible http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=5257&replies=7
(2) We need to cover the three options for personalizing your blog http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=6406&replies=9#post-41308
(3) javascript, flash, embeds and forms
(4) adsense and other advertising
(5) importing blogs
(6) We need to say something about being patient i.e. allowing a reasonable turn-around time for getting answers to support questions, as some folks are bumping their own posts before I can even get the threads out of the search box to answer them (no kidding). I have had to resort to “canned answers” in order to get them up there fast enough to prevent the bumping :(
(7) We need to have information that lets bloggers know there are two editors so they don’t have to automatically assume they have to use to use the visual rich text editor (turn away from the dark side *she chuckled*)
(8) We need to expand the key word access to the FAQs blog as the way people phrase questions changes all the time but the key words don’t. Here’s an example “images” is cool but “photos” and “pictures” are synonyms that ought to lead to the same links as “images”.
(9) My notes say that people are asking lots of questions about authors, contributers, editors, etc. In fact I think Mark may have said that “subscribers” or “users” or one of the lower categories has been removed.
(11) Please let’s cover making “meaningful titles” on posts. We are getting post titles that have nothing whatsoever to do with the topics in the posts.
(10) Perhaps a section on etiquette could be included. We frequently have people making multiple postings on the same topics and then we have those who shout and use multiple exclamation marks. My gut response to these is “make ’em wait”.
P.S. We need to get forum volunteers to stop answering wordpress.org questions on this forum. Edit: And I don’t mean you O’Venerable Wizard of the short answer. :)

Actually if I can point someone to the answer that they need, I’ll go ahead and do it along with posting that they’re in the wrong place and need to be over at wp.org. Like a “Where is this plugin?” or “How do I install a theme?” I’ll point them to the codex page along with the wp.org link.
If it’s long and detailed, then I just give them the wp.org link.

For example, this one would have just gotten the link although I would have stated that as an example of the differences between the software, we don’t have access to upload newly created Page templates over here. (The “we can’t upload files” bit.)
The “My sidebar has dropped” question will usually get a response out of me if I see it right away though. How to change the editor will get answered. Stuff like that.

@drmike
I’m getting a feel for this now but I admit I haven’t been as good at it as I’d like to be. Also I know I have a TMI problem that I’m working on. Thanks for being gracious enough not to call me on it. And thanks for all the guidance you give me every day. I trace and take note of every correction you give but I’m not perfect yet *lol* as you have noticed.
P.S. I’m getting glasses so reading will not be such a chore. Also my computer is going to re-built next week. Yup, it’s going to be a very tight budget that we’re looking at for awhile … rice and beans … blech! -
