This idea could change EVERYTHING!!!

My idea is to bring back the ability to use Plugins. It’s an idea that could change everything because with one bold “upgrade”, you removed the freedom to “roll your own” and I’m guessing that it will start a stampede of of former devotees to other publishing platforms that didn’t forget why folks chose them. I’m really beside myself wondering what in the world could you (the WordPress folks who make decisions like that) have been thinking? If we wanted to make choices and create cookie cutter websites we’d have gone to one of the thousands who already do that.
I have several hosted websites that are paying customers and was shocked when I saw what you did. I won’t effect me one way or the other because as I said I get WordPress through a hosting company, but geez Loiuse people… Really? It’s like showing up to a 1st Amendment rally and being handed a list of approved words that can be used because they are the best ones to use. Do you see that? Or have bean counters done to you what they do to the other internet successes that end up like MySpace?
I will most certainly be shopping around to see who hasn’t lost their minds, as I have used them all but preferred WordPress up until today. Joomla, Drupal etc must be stunned in euphoric disbelief at the bone headed move their biggest competitor just made. If someone in the WordPress board of whoever calls the shots decides to bring back the Plugins, let me know and I’d love to come back. Until then I’ll just maintain what I already have and move along to a publishing platform that gets it.

See here http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/ There are plugins installed by Staff, but as this is a multiuser blogging plaftorm and our blogs are not free standing but share a common architecture, allowing us bloggers FTP access and the ability to install plugins would lead to disaster. Why? Because many plugins are crap – they are unstable code ie. bad code and that means they can and do take down a single self hosted WordPress.ORG site. Imagine how many WordPress.COM sites would go down due to one bad plugin.
If you have a specific requests for a specific plugins post here. If you don’t then don’t bother wasting your time making speeches. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org and set up a WordPress.org install. http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I used a WordPress hosted blog because I wanted to others to be encouraged to use WordPress, not because I don’t had to. I can and do use WordPress that is professionally hosted so my “speech” has nothing to do with me being able to incorporate plugins in any of the websites I either have created or work on, it had to do with what others would experience after I endorsed WP as the best platform; largely because of the ability of newbies to use plugins that don’t know how to code but want to publish on the internet.
Your response is probably why the decision was made in the first place, and I don’t have the time or inclination to argue about this. My solution is very simple… export the content I have here and import it into a hosted WordPress installation. A luxury that many don’t have that are learning and investing their time and energy into what they will later use professionally. Take it or leave, my two cents is that WordPress will in time look back at this and see that they alienated a lot of students and aspiring web designers.

I have been here for 8 years and that’s longer than most Staff have even been on Staff. There has never ever been FTP access and the ability for blogger installed plugins. WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are separate and different. http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You know what? When you framed it in time as you did I had to think back when I used the blogname.wordpress.com wordpress account before and honestly couldn’t recall, so I do apologize for the unhappy customer rant. I was accustomed to seeing it and was shocked when I thought one of the best things about WordPress was removed. Trust me, I have been a WordPress from the day I say it and my negative reaction is because I thought something I valued very much had been carved up bean counters. Happens all the time actually. But again my apologies and please accept it with an explanation for my passion beased upon passion for the product :)
