"This Post" greyed out in Media Library when editing blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

When I attempt to add or edit an image block in a blog post, the “This Post” menu item at the top of the Media Library dialog is greyed out. How I can I use the Media Library to successfully filter for images used for the blog I’m editing ?

I have over 14,000 images in my media library, so this makes revising images on an old blog post near impossible.

I have looked at the Media Library from within the Admin Console, and they are attached to the blogs in question so WordPress knows they are linked to that particular blog.

    Thanks !

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Small update, if I do this in the classic editor it works fine. Would really prefer not to have to keep switching editors…

  • Hi there,

Can you please share a post where this is happening? I’m not sure where you’re seeing the “This Post” menu item.

It happens with all my posts from the last couple of years, pretty sure as soon as the new block editor was introduced and I started using it.

Please see the following link for where I’m observing this, it’s the Add Media overlay box when pops up whenever you want to add more pictures or modify what pictures are used for a particular block.

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for pointing that out, the image block only looks for images in the media library, and nothing else.

Just out of curiosity, what’s the workflow you’re following that would make that feature useful for the image block?

We’re always on the look out for feedback where/when possible.

    Many thanks in advance.

But all my images *are* in the Media Library ! All 14,000 of them !

As I said, this works fine in the classic editor.

My requirement is simple, I want to see images that have been uploaded and associated with the post I’m editing. They are clearly associated with the blog (as seen from the Admin Console), so why can I not filter the Media Library for images associated with the blog I’m editing ?

If I try to edit a blog from 3 years ago that have a cluster of images associated with it from way back, it’s near impossible to get to them from the media library. I would have expected “This Post” to take me there.

  • Hello there,

Ok many thanks for that additional information.

It should be possible to see where image have been uploaded to here: https://kevinstandagephotography.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php > in the uploaded to column.

    I hope this helps.

How does that help when I’m in the middle of editing a old blog post ?

Surely this is a bug as it works fine with the classic editor. Trying to scroll down through thousands of photos to locate the ones used while editing an old post is not a viable workaround really.

  • I see what you’re saying.

I wouldn’t say that this is a bug, but perhaps feedback we can run up the flag pole as this would make for a good use case.

In the meantime, you may wish to edit your posts via WP Admin > Posts.

The reason being is because when clicking on the image to change, you will be able to filter the media library by date and even search for images.

WP Admin provides a slightly different interface to work with.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks for your reply.

I used to be a director of software quality, so personally I can’t see this being anything other than a defect if it works with the classic editor but not with the new editor.

From a usability perspective it would make a massive difference if the behavior was consistent, and carried through into the new editor.

    Kevin.
