This sounds daft, but….
-
I just can’t get the text widgets to work. Other widgets (blogroll, categories, pages, etc; fine). But trying to put either images, email or even (to test) a simple text message, achieves nothing. Nothing shows in the sidebar (other than the already working widgets).
I’ve double checked the code; I’ve followed to the letter the instructions in the FAQs; I’ve searched the forums; and yes, I’m a primitive still using IE6 (which nonetheless is OK with the other widgets).
Obviously I’m making a very basic error; and I won’t demur at any insults to my intelligence. But please could someone help before I reach meltdown?
This is the blog I’m having trouble controlling:
-
Unfortunately IE6 is problematic.
Have you tried refreshing your browser? http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/06/force-refresh/Have your tried this?
The Cookie Dance
step 1. log out
step 2. clear your browser cookie
step 3. clear your browser cache/temporary internet files
step 4. close your browser
step 5. go back and testIs it possible for you to use firefox 2.0.0.11 or to upgrade to IE7?
-
I assume this is what you are doing:
1) Pull text widget from “available widgets” pane to “sidebar” pane
2) Click on icon at the right end of the widget, the window opens, you put in some text and then click the little “x” in the upper right corner
3) Click the “save changes” button and then view the siteIs that correct?
-
FWIW I just loaded this theme on my test blog and put up a text widget with IE7 – no problem and then with firefox 2.0.0.11 with no problem. Do these intstructions this help? http://wpbloggingtips.wordpress.com/2007/12/09/wordpress-widgets/
@tsp
*lol* You’re cracking me up because you just did an imitation of me. …*lol* -

*blush*
yeah, I did all those things; except I forgot to “click the little “x” in the upper right corner”….the email connection now works (although not – as yet – the picture. I’ll try again).
I said I wouldn’t “demur at any insults to my intelligence”, so feel free….
Meanwhile, many thanks; also to timethief for his/her suggestions….

Gosh I wouldn’t advise you placing a linked email address on your blog at all. The spam bots will crawl it for sure. But there are alternatives that you can use to elude the spam bots. Please check this out http://wpbloggingtips.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/eluding-email-address-spam-bots/
P.S. I’m a lady. ;)

@doggerelist
I agree with timethief. The spambots will find your email address and crawl all over your inbox.Here’s an FAQ that talks about writing all kinds of links: http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/07/01/how-to-write-links/
-
timethief: I followed your link; thanks. I’m sure I’ll go for one of those bot swervers eventually. But it’s one step at a time at the moment for me; as you can tell from my daft original question…. ;-} The only thing I can say to mitigate my naivete is that my missus has an open email on a commercial site, and thus far we’ve coped with the spam….
“P.S. I’m a lady. ;) ” – all women say that…. ;-}

If you aren’t going to munge your email address then I do suggest that you set your blog up so you moderate all comments. Nothing is more upsetting than to sign into your blog and find that the penis enlarger, viagra pushers, flesh peddlars and other drug spammers have auto posted comments with links to their products on your blog that you were unaware of.
-
Yes, I may well do that. I turned off the “moderate comments” option previously – I need to encourage comments, and I know how frustrating it is to write a considered comment which doesn’t appear for days….swings and roundabouts, isn’t it: between encouraging readers and repelling boarders. A lot of people with litblogs have turned comments off, which to my mind defeats the point of a litblog (although many of them are so unreadable that it may be the fear of honest criticism which rules….)
I haven’t yet had any spam in the comments after a month of the blog. I’m sure I will at some point, though, and then I’ll have to reconsider moderating comments.
-
Thanks for considering what I said. If your issue is now “resolved” you can find the option to mark it so in your original post.
Happy blogging! :) -
Having just checked the spam filter, I find there have been two attempted comments caught as spam by Akismet….one was from “timethief” (your warning….) :-O
