I’m trying to renew and I get the following error message: “This transaction cannot be processed due to an unsupported currency.”
I picked CAD funds, which was offered by a WordPress pop-up screen, and the card I’m using is in CAD funds.
So what gives?

The cost of upgrades in different currencies varies based on currency conversion rates as well as other local costs (such as VAT).
The currency used for buying upgrades at WordPress.com depends on your billing information. For example, if your billing address is in Brazil you will see Reais, but if your billing address is in the United States you will see US dollars. If you’d like to be billed in US dollars, you’ll need to choose a billing method (such as credit card or PayPal account) linked to a US billing address.
Below are the only accepted means of payment.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/payment/WordPress.com uses PayPal as the payment processor, and as such, can only accept payment from countries they support: https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/
If for whatever reason, they have chosen to block payment from your country, you will not be able to purchase an upgrade here unless you have a source of payment outside of your country. Note: You can buy a prepaid credit card from an approved country.
In addition to major credit cards Mastercard, VISA, American Express, Discover, and PayPal https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/ WordPress.com can accept echecks and some debit cards.
The debit card must have a VISA or Mastercard symbol on it, and should work just like a credit card when selecting the VISA or Mastercard option on the payment form, even though it’s a debit card.

Hi there,
Is the card you using an Amex? We’ve recently encountered problems when a user is paying with AMEX cards in a non USD currency. If you are using an Amex, trying a different card should work, but let me know if that is not the case.

It is, in fact, an AMEX card. Should I simply pay in USD funds to avoid this glitch? Or will this be fixed shortly?

It is something we are working on, but it won’t be fixed anytime soon. So, yes, I changed your currency for payment to USD. You should be able to use the card now.
