THOROUGHLY PISSED OFF

  • Unknown's avatar

I am so bloody frustrated with this new NOT IMPROVED version of WordPress I’m about ready to pack up and walk away! All I wanted to do was bang out a quick blog post, and I’ve spent HOURS farting around trying to get it to work. My mistake – I thought I’d ‘check it out’ … Well, I checked it out, decided it was too BLOODY complicated to deal with right now, and tried to check back – and can I? THE FUCK I CAN!!! I insert pictures and I either can’t edit them (change position, size, caption) or they vanish altogether. Will they pop up again somewhere else in the post? In another completely different post? Attached to a virtual kite tail somewhere in the cyberverse? I can’t do a damn thing with this and I’m FED UP because I wanted the post to go up NOW, and I’m too damn tired to deal with this so it has to wait and be late, which FUCKS with the endorphins, guys!

So fine, I’ll research your bloody new system – which I can already see doesn’t do anything I might have wanted it to do – but right now, guys, what I want to know is, how the fuck do I make my current post go back to the old format so I can just put it together and move on.

Seriously. I’d apologize for all the fucks, but frankly you deserve them.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Are you talking about the new Editor by wordpress.com?

You can switch back to old one classic editor
Go to My Sites > Add New page > Right side top Click on 3 dots > Select Switch to classic editor

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope, doesn’t help. I’ve tried several times, taking time to breathe deeply and think happy thoughts between each attempt.

First, I’m not trying to create a new page; I’m trying to create a new post. Second, clicking on the 3 dots simply toggles the editing options – it has nothing to do with which editor I use.

What infuriates me is, I switched to the new editor to test it out. Didn’t see anything I couldn’t live without in the short term, decided I’d take time to learn how to use it when I had time, and figured out how to switch back to classic editor. But switching back to classic editor didn’t get rid of any of the elements of the new editor. So what I have now is a mess.

Note to Happiness Engineers: I AM NOT HAPPY

And I’ll tell you something else that makes me crazy … If you cut and paste from a post in which you were silly enough to try the new editor, into a fresh post created using the old editor, the new editor crap WILL CROSS OVER and fuck up the new post, no matter how many times or how passionately you declare your preference for the old system.

And then it will suddenly stop scrolling. You will not be able to scroll up to the beginning of your post, or down to the lower part of your post. You will be able to see it in preview, but you will not be able to access anything that isn’t actually on your screen at the time it decides not to scroll.

For Fuck’s Sake, WordPress – WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?????

  • Unknown's avatar

Also, switching to document history and restoring an old version of the post? FORGET ABOUT IT. Not going to happen.

Fuck I hate this. This is supposed to be my happy place where I come to relax, play, and connect with a community I like. What part of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” do you assholes not understand?

  • @americansoustannie, I can see you’re on the classic editor right now.

Were you used to wordpress.com/post or americansoustannie.wordpress.com/wp-admin before?

If it’s still “stuck” in the new editor for whatever reason, could you maybe try closing your browser and re-opening it, or clearing the cache? Here’s how.

Also, while I can definitely understand the frustration of just trying to blog and running into issues, please understand too that the people in these forums are only here to help, and do not deserve verbal abuse.

If you would like more help here, we’ll help how we can, but you will need to abide by the community standards.

    Thank you!

  • About this:

If you cut and paste from a post in the new editor, into a fresh post created using the old editor, the new editor WILL CROSS OVER to the new post

Instead of copying and pasting, I’d recommend switching to the old editor while in the post. If that isn’t working, let us know which post is giving you trouble and we’ll check it out.

Supernovia, thank you for your effort to help. I will respond point by point because, while I’ll be quick to admit I’m not especially tech savvy, I don’t think this system is working quite as intended … and I see you’re “staff” so maybe you’re in a position to kick the appropriate butt. Or feed the appropriate butt-owner donuts. Whatever works.

I can see you’re on the classic editor right now.

Yes, after trying repeatedly to fix the problem within WP, I copied and pasted my entire post to Word, removed all formatting, edited it there, and created a brand new post using classic editor. I then deleted my earlier attempts.

Were you used to wordpress.com/post or americansoustannie.wordpress.com/wp-admin before?

I have no idea what you mean. I point my cursor at the top right corner of my blog and click on the +Write icon and voila. (Usually. There are other things one can click, but that’s the method I usually use.)

If it’s still “stuck” in the new editor for whatever reason, could you maybe try closing your browser and re-opening it, or clearing the cache? Here’s how.

I didn’t merely close my browser, I rebooted my computer several times. Didn’t think of clearing the cache. Thank you for the suggestion; I’ll try to remember it next time I have to do tech.

Instead of copying and pasting, I’d recommend switching to the old editor while in the post. If that isn’t working, let us know which post is giving you trouble and we’ll check it out.

I did try this, repeatedly, in the original post and then in the post I created to replace it that I accidentally imported new editor formatting into, despite having set up BOTH posts in classic editor. These posts are now in my trash folder. I don’t know whether you can access them there; maybe you’ll be able to see what the problem was.

Also, while I can definitely understand the frustration of just trying to blog and running into issues, please understand too that the people in these forums are only here to help, and do not deserve verbal abuse.

To be very clear, the abuse was not directed at the human helpers on this forum. If any feelings were hurt, I apologize. I appreciate being able to come here for help, and I greatly appreciate the prompt responses – even though they weren’t helpful, I can tell your hearts are in the right place.

My annoyance was – and still is – firmly directed at WordPress and the idiot/s employed by WordPress who thought this was a good way to roll out a “fix” that many might consider unnecessary. Here’s the thing … You don’t say “Something new coming! Take a look!” and then when the poor deluded idiot blogger clicks on your invitation, hook them in with “Try this!” and then sandbag them and THEN make it impossible for them to change their minds and run away!

While I was trying to figure all this out I stumbled upon a video clip that I THINK explains how the new system works, and what all these “blocks” are for, and why they are going to improve my life and generate more endorphins during my blogging experience. I’m not sure that’s what it’s about because I didn’t look at it – at that time I was simply looking for solutions – I wanted out of the new editor so that I could finish my blog and GO TO BED. I’m not sure where this clip is, so today when it occurred to me to take a look at it, I couldn’t find it.

Logically, when the window pops up at the bottom of my screen inviting me to learn more about the new editing system, IT SHOULD LINK TO A VIDEO CLIP EXPLAINING THE NEW EDITING SYSTEM. It should NOT plunge me, mid-blog, into confusion.

So … yeah. I stand by my temper tantrum, and may the lesser creatures of the primeval ooze rain down upon the desk of the perpetrator of this mess and clog their keyboard and stink up their coffee.

  • The humans behind the new updates are responding to many other humans asking for these kinds of changes.

And I’m one of several humans who advocated for giving folks a chance to try the editor and say what’s working well for them and what is not. We had hoped giving you a chance to try it as you’d like then switch back and provide feedback as needed would be helpful. I’m sorry it did not go smoothly for you.

I can see the items in the trash, however I can’t actually view the code without restoring them first. Do you mind restoring them and making them private? As staff I can see them and try to sort out what went wrong.

Also, you mentioned copying and pasting into Word as a means to fix this. Do you normally compose in Word or in the editor itself? I’m assuming the editor based on what you described?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m sorry my initial feedback wasn’t more constructive. Let’s see if I can change that.

I have published my four failed attempts as private posts. Hope you find them helpful.

I usually compose directly into the editor. Copying and pasting to Word and cleaning it up there was a last-ditch attempt to get the post done.

For what it’s worth, here are some of the problems I experienced…

    1. Pictures. I went through the usual process of uploading pictures to the media and then putting them into the post. Usually when the pic is in the post, you click on it and a selection of icons appears so you can decide where to position the pic and also insert a caption. This didn’t happen. I was also not able to change the size of the picture. At one point I was furiously clicking and jiggling my mouse on different parts of the picture, and the picture sort of separated out from the text, the icons I was looking for appeared, and then the whole thing disappeared. It behaved as though it had disappeared behind the text, or moved somewhere else, but I couldn’t find it – it was just gone.

    2. The slide thingummy on the right side of the screen, that you use for scrolling up and down through a document, disappeared. There was no way to access any part of my post except what was visible on the screen. I tried using the roller on my mouse, I tried going to the bottom of the screen and using down arrows – nothing worked. I could still work within the visible segment, and I could see the whole thing when I checked the preview, but I couldn’t access the whole post in edit mode.

    3. Apparently when you insert a block for text you can then move it around, but I was never really able to figure out what began and ended where. I couldn’t see any way, for instance, to lock a series of blocks together, so if I wanted to move a chunk of text I’d have to move one block at a time – with each heading and picture being in its own block.

    4. Every time I went into the post it told me that some of it was in the new format and offered the option of working in classic editor, warning me that I might lose some work if I chose that option. Each time I chose that option, but it behaved as though I hadn’t and the next time I went into the post after saving and going out of it I’d again have to choose the classic editor option.

    SUGGESTION:
    1. Instead of dumping uninformed people into the new system, how about first letting us watch a video that explains how it works? Things that may be obvious to the technologically initiated can be quite difficult for the rest of us to grasp.
    2. I didn’t spend a lot of time in the new editor – at any rate, not voluntarily. However, I think one thing that would really help is if the blocks were visible. How about showing what is enclosed in these blocks by providing borders in grayscale while one is in edit mode? And also creating a very obvious way to hook blocks together, so that you can move them in a group? I presume that’s one of the advantages of having blocks – being able to move things around and change the order of text and pictures. This wouldn’t be a huge advantage to me but I can see where it would be useful.
    3. While you’re changing things around, would it be possible to create a text box option? Sometimes I’d love to have a text box off to one side of my main copy.
    4. Another change I’d like is to be able to control the formatting of headings and text. Instead of just once-off format changes, it would be nice to be able to permanently define my headings and text in a format of my choosing.

  • Thanks for the suggestion on hooking blocks together. I don’t think I’ve heard that but it’s a good idea. I’ll check to see if anyone else has suggested it. If that have, I’ll add your vote. If they haven’t, I’ll file that suggestion for you.

About videos, there are quite a few “Gutenberg” videos out in the wild right now, but very few of them show the combined experience with the WordPress.com editor. It’s just a bit different. I think once some of the features are better settled into place, we’ll be making a video and sharing that.

Re: the text box, there is one actually! We call it a pull quote, or you can have an image next to a quote. And images should be able to resize as well. The scroll bar thing sounds like your browser was feeling overwhelmed! A quick restart of the browser should clear that right up. If you’re still missing your scroll bar though, let us know what browser you use & we’ll do some testing.

I just made a little (awkward) video of a few of these things so you can see how they should be working.

You can see a few things are still needing some polish, but we’re working on all that. When we’re in active development like this, things can change pretty rapidly. So if I were you, I’d focus on writing posts in the classic editor for now, but perhaps after saving your draft but prior to publishing, test out the newer editor to see how it suits you then (as we’ll have fixed more bugs for sure). And do send any feedback you’ve got.
