Those little images in the url links.

When I go to alot of sites, they have cute little images in the url link of their site. How do we do that and can we do it at WordPress? Thanks!

I found a place to make them but as best I can determine, we can’t use them here on wordpress.com Seems you have to host your own site to use them

Yep, it would require a plugin or javascript dependent on what version your desire to use.

Blogs at Blogger have them. So they’re not hosting their own sites. But maybe because javascript is used though. Thanks everyone!

Those are called favicons.
But as far as I know, you have to upload those into your wordpress directory for it to show up and unless we get FTP, I don’t think we can get those.

If you’re talking about favicons, there can only be one for an entire domain, and that image has to be placed directly in the root folder. That’s why all WP blogs get the WP favicon–the circle with a capital “W” in it.

it’s almost the same kind of problem as with a custom header image. no need for FTP, can be for subdomains as well.
how about having something like:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="<?php bloginfo('url'); ?>/files/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />in the
themes/../header.phpand an appropriate rewrite rule? -

Subdomains and sub directories can have them as well. It’s either a default or you can direct what file to use with the link that options mentions above.

Perhaps we would have better chances of this if we could ask the theme developers to include this option from the dashboard as well?

certainly.
though, not all theme devs may take into account some wpMU complications, at least ‘Fauna Beta’ (since v4) and ‘Regulus’ are almost ready for that.

Anyone watching this thread should read through that page.
Tons of great information about what favicons are and aren’t.
They don’t require javascript.
They are not limited to one per domain/folder/etc.
They are kinda messed up in terms of standards (thanks Microsoft!)
They could be used by nothing more than uploading them as an image into your blog.
However, then the HTML has to be modified to point to the icon.
That’s where wp.com staff comes in. -

Yes, custom favicons.
As I said, all that needs to be done is for the user to upload their choice of favicon. Then we need a tiny little function/option to add in the necessary into our theme:
Preferably both the broke IE method, and the accepted standard:
<link rel="icon" href="http://example.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://example.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />I think I’ll whip something up and submit it to wpmu and ask to have it sent over here first…
