  I was meant to understand that the WordPress is free, how come I am requested to pay some amount of money for mapping? What is it for? what and what will I be asked to pay for?

  At WordPress.com, we have four plans. The free plan allows you to create your free website, but to use a custom domain either by transferring or mapping, you need a paid plan.

  Free plan doesn’t allow you to use a custom domain. Please read the domain mapping support document.
