Thread for Volunteers: test, ask, practice, and more…

  • Dear fellow volunteers. Hello! :)

I am not sure if it is only me, who thought a thread like this would be useful, but I have been wanting to open one. So here you go.

I am a relatively new volunteer here at the forum. I am still learning a lot, but I really enjoy my time here.

Often I found myself trying to do certain things, as I am assisting questions, and it just won’t work. But of course I don’t want to use a “live thread” for practicing, so I can never really sharpen my skills.

Well, this is the thread for that! Have at it!
Do you have some questions about being a volunteer? Ask away!
Do you wanna practice your skills with blockquotes or images? Try as much as you want.

Hopefully others will find this helpful as well! Cheers!

  • I am going to kick us off as well.

I am actually having problems with embedding gifs into my responses. Recently I have been creating gifs to help people. I thought it might make it even more easy for them to follow. But often I can’t embed it into the forum correctly, and only leaves an empty box behind. Are there any file size, or image size limitations?

    Lets see now.

the gif I want to embed: https://csabarakasz.files.wordpress.com/2021/05/12a028b8-e345-423b-95e9-52b1bc311796.gif

  • img test 3:

    code img test 3:
    <img src=“https://csabarakasz.files.wordpress.com/2021/05/12a028b8-e345-423b-95e9-52b1bc311796.gif” width=“100”>

    code img test 3:

  • Alright. I am sure it is something obvious, but what am I missing.

What ways do you guys use to insert gifs into a responses?

    Thanks

Hi @csabarakasz, when I open your image in a new tab, in the address bar there’s an extra quotation mark at the end of the file name, like image.gif" I’m not sure why that is happening. Are you using regular quote marks or perhaps “curly” quote marks? They must be straight.

Here’s my attempt at your file:

  • Wow. Thanks @justjennifer. This is so interesting. I didn’t realize it wouldn’t recognize it because of that. I have been doing a little coding at different places, and never experienced an issue with it.

I guess after a little research, I realized it’s an iOS thing. It’s called Smart Punctuation, and it turns this ” into this “ automatically. I guess at other places, where I use code, it wasn’t an issue, but it is here.

    Thank you!

  • Hi there,

    I have another question.

I know emails can not be posted in the public forum. What about general support emails for companies? For example, I was trying to help a user by directing them to the right place to ask their question, and that included the company support email.

    For example: support(at)madeupcompanyname.com

Would this be not allowed either?

    Thank you for the feedback!

Hello again! Any email address written normally is automatically redacted by the forum software. There are a few internal exceptions that Staff can share directly, otherwise, how you’ve written above would only be the way to share it.

Also If you answer a forum post or come across a forum post where someone has added their email in a way that the forum software doesn’t redact it, a password, phone number, address or any such type of personal information, including receipt and transaction numbers, please MODLOOK the thread and add a tag “remove personal info”. Thanks for your help!

  • Hi dear Volunteers and Staff,

Here is a new situation I haven’t met with yet. How do I report an assumed bug I found?

I was helping a Member and I noticed that the link shown below points to a WordPress.org support site. Is that normal?

This link takes me to: https://wordpress.org/support/article/writing-posts/#post-field-descriptions

I checked multiple test pages of mine and they all point to this address. Thanks!

  • Hm, that’s odd. What’s the URL of the site you saw that on?

  • I was editing my test page at https://csabarakasz.wordpress.com/ (It is set to private right now. Might not be a problem for you as Staff though :) ).

I checked and it always happens for me in the block editor. Both when editing pages or posts.

Ok thanks for clarifying! That section is part of the core WordPress software so it links to the WordPress.org support document here, so it’s not really a bug. We have a separate support doc here on WordPress.com with similar information, but we’re using what is part of the actual WordPress software.

Other links in that Post area also link to WordPress.org – Excerpts for example – so it’s not something that would need to be updated.

    I hope that helps!

  • Thank you! Still a lot to learn ;)

    @csabarakasz, and friends…

Thanks for starting this topic. I’ve been meaning for months to start a related topic, on how to embed not only GIFs specifically in a forum post, but any acceptable image file type (JPG, PNG, etc.). I used to know how to do it, many years ago, but I seem to have forgotten how.

Each of my recent attempts to insert an image into a forum post have failed (for example, in this post in a test topic of mine), and a review of my bookmarks on the topic today revealed that I’ve been periodically asking how to do it in multiple forums for nearly two years. In July 2019, for example, I asked here, in a forum topic containing a PNG image how it was inserted into a forum post, but the only response was from someone whose example failed to display.

More recently (March 2021) I asked how to do it in a Forums Help topic without receiving a single response. I also noticed today that of five forum topics I’ve collected that contain a successfully inserted image, every one of the images is in PNG format.

So, in summary my questions are:

    1. What file formats may be inserted into a forum topic post?
    2. How do you insert an image into a forum topic post?
    3. Is there some reason why PNG format was used, by staff in some cases, in all of the successful examples I found today, or is it just a coincidence?
    4. Wouldn’t it be a good idea for WordPress.com to provide a support page, or perhaps a section within the volunteer guide, that outlines what types of images may be inserted into a support forums topic, AND instructions on how to accomplish the trick.
