threaded comments
-
is there a way to create threaded comments? I need to be able to have comments on comments (rather than on the entries themselves) that show up as indented below the comment to which they are referring.
as an example:
Any posts an entry and ten others immediately comment on the entry. Let’s assume Mary posted the third of the ten comments. Then Sue comes in and wants to comment on the Mary’s (the third) comment. When Sue adds her comment it should show up as indented below Mary’s, between the third and fourth comments.
As I now see it, Sue’s comment on what Mary had to say will simply show up as the eleventh comment to Andy’s original post.
Ideally the thread should work to any level (someone else comes along and remarks on Sue’s comment leaving it indented below Sue’s remarks, etc.) but just first and second level comments is better than what I now have.
Any ideas?

if there are no threaded comments in WordPress.com can I ask how icanhascheezburger does it?

Sure: They pay several hundred dollars a month for VIP status. If you are willing to pay for VIP status, you are pretty much exempt from everything except US law.
FWIW, threaded comments work against you on Technorati and Google. For at least a limited period of time, Technorati was counting new comments by you as links to your blog if they showed up in the Recent Comments widget. I don’t think they’re doing that anymore, but it was good while it lasted.

Would threaded comments be that difficult to implement? It’d be nice to have the option of each reply appearing subordinated (indented) beneath the particular comment it addresses. Unfortunately I can’t afford several hundred dollars a month for VIP status.
I know many teachers who would flock to WordPress as an educational platform if it supported threaded discussions. I’m often asked for a good, free web 2.0 tool for threaded discussions, but no one service seems to have risen to the top. With a blend of both blogging and threaded discussion, WordPress would steal the market.
