Three Column Posts

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve only been using WordPress for a month. I am looking for the best possible way to display three select posts in a row across my homepage with headers labeling what they are. I’ve tried:
Using the header feature on the Blog Posts block. I put in a bunch of spaces to align the text with the posts but when I view my page it deletes the extra spaces, so all the text is on the left side. Since there’s only one header bar, this feature is completely useless.
Using the Columns block as a header. The support article says you’re supposed to be able to set the block to full width. I can’t find that option. Without full width, I cannot position the text above each post. Useless.
Using the Heading block. Again, not full width, again useless. What really doesn’t make sense is why you can drag and position the block where you need it to be. I might have figured out something if it weren’t stuck in the middle of the page.
Using Blog Posts in the Columns block. I really thought this would work! I’d end up with three Blog Post Blocks, each with its own header bar. But it won’t let me set the number of posts displayed to one.
I saw something in one of the article about some themes having limited options. Setting up this site was painstaking with this unfamiliar and rather restrictive editor. I could not bear changing the theme and remaking the site just so I have the options I need! Please help!

  • Hi the5simplex, I’d recommend this block and its three column setting:

You can add a header block before that if you want to, and a spacer block above that.

If you need more help, could you send a link to the site you’re having trouble with?

If you want three across you wouldn’t be able to set the posts to be 1.

I think we need more details about what you hope to do, and we also need a link to the site.

    The site is here https://evanscottrognholt.wordpress.com/

You can see that right now I have just the blog posts block on my home page. All I want to do is put some sort of label above each of those columns.

You mention the Heading block, but as I said, it is not wide enough.

I know you need to set Blog Posts to three to get three posts. But that’s if your using the full block. When I mentioned adjusting the number of posts displayed, I was talking about using a blog posts block within a columns block. Set the block to one and thus have three posts, one in each column. But you can’t do that.

  • I’m not sure I understand what exactly are you trying to achieve. Right now, you’re displaying three post blogs in three columns, each has its own title. Is your idea to add a header (text) for each above in the spot when the arrow points to?

  • The Blog Posts block allows you to only have a single header. The only solution I see is to insert the Column block and inside each column add a header (with the Paragraph block) and a single blog post.

That actually worked. I didn’t realize choosing specific posts would allow you to display one post. But it’s still in the middle of the page because the Column Block isn’t full width. Is there a way to change that, or another way to solve my original problem? The site looked a lot better with just a blog posts block and I’d really prefer to use that instead of a column block.

  • You need to set the Columns Block, so the main block containing the individual columns to full width:

To select that block, click inside one of the columns. The sidebar on the right will likely show you’ve selected a blog posts block. Press the up-arrow on your keyboard, and it should show a column block selected. Press up once more, and now it should show the columns block. Then click the Alignment option in the block toolbar, and switch it from Wide Width to Full-width.
