Thumbnail in Top Posts & Pages widget still displaying wrong images
-
For at least two pages on my site, the thumbnail in Top Posts & Pages widget is still displaying an image drawn from the gallery of the post or page visited, as I previously described in an October 2015 topic. I will describe the issue in more detail below.

In my forum topic “Thumbnail in Top Posts & Pages widget displaying an image not in page’s gallery,” begun on 9 October 2015, I said on 11 October:
So, in the Top Posts & Pages widget the following two pages are now displaying a thumbnail not drawn from the page it is mistakenly representing, but drawn from the page one is visiting:
In fact, the links to these pages at Top Posts & Pages both display the same thumbnail drawn from the page or post one is visiting.
This problem persists. The following screenshots illustrate the issue with regard to the page “Ethel Waters: selected recordings, 1921-1934,” a link to which is presently displayed in the Top Posts & Pages widget (renamed “Recent visitor favorites”). The thumbnail image which displays beside the “Ethel Waters” page in the widget is not drawn from the page itself, but from the gallery of the page one is visiting instead. The thumbnail supposedly corresponding to the affected link in the Top Posts & Pages widget will change every time you visit a different post or page.
1. Misplaced thumbnail from “1940-1949 selected standards and hits” page: http://snag.gy/qemRI.jpg
2. Misplaced thumbnail from “Marks, Johnny : Christmas songs” page: http://snag.gy/EIHJh.jpg
3. Misplaced thumbnail from “Songbook site index” post: http://snag.gy/OU1V9.jpgThe thumbnail corresponding to most of the pages which appear in the Top Posts & Pages widget, and these frequently change from day to day and throughout a single day, do not change in the manner I’ve described above. The only two pages I’ve discovered this far which are affected by this bug are the Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters pages which I’ve provided links to above.

The issue occurs in precisely the same way with Firefox 43.0.2 and a recent version of Google Chrome.

Hi, @musicdoc1
I looked through all the pages currently appearing in your widget, and the only difference I could spot between them, and the two you listed above, was that these two, besides having the images in the page content, also have the images in a gallery at the end of the page.
Can you try removing the gallery from those pages and see if it still has this problem the next time it appears in the widget? To remove the gallery, cut the shortcode out and paste it in a text file so you can easily add it back later if it turns out this is not the cause of the problem.
I’ll also try to set up my own test for this, but due to the time it takes for the widget to update it would help if you can try to test my theory yourself. Thanks :)

@ kokkieh,
Thank you. Your suggestion provided the clue that led to the solution. The problem wasn’t the gallery at the bottom alone, because there are a number of other pages with galleries at the bottom which don’t result in the same error if they appear in Top Posts & Pages. The location of the gallery is not the cause of the problem, though the gallery shortcode is involved.
In my tests, the error occurs in cases where a basic gallery shortcode, without image ids, is used. It doesn’t occur if the ids are included in the code. So the issue was resolved by upgrading the gallery shortcodes to include image ids.
The gallery shortcodes lacking image ids in those two pages were vestiges of a period when that was the norm. I may have one or two others on the site that I’ve yet to notice and update.
The slideshow shortcode without image ids doesn’t result in the same error.
A hint to those who might encounter the same or a related issue. To change a basic gallery shortcode to one that includes image ids, you don’t have to go hunting for the image ids and insert them one by one. Merely shifting an image momentarily in the gallery editor is enough to prompt WordPress.com to update the shortcode with all image ids included.
Thanks again. Happy holidays!
