Thumbnail pictures do not display on home page?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello, On my main page, the pictures (thumbnail view) to not display…? How do I get them to display or is there a waiting period for a display…You can click on them and they display, but not beforehand. thanks.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I switched my test blog to that theme and made a post, the thumbnail showed up instantly (as it should). So there is something funky going on.

    How are you adding the image to the post? Can you detail the steps you do? Here’s what I did for my test post: I uploaded a few images to my library, clicked “add new” post, clicked “add media” and inserted the image I wanted to use from my library.

    For the record there’ nothing funky going on. On the main page, Suburbia doesn’t display regularly inserted images. They only display when a post is viewed on its own page – not on the front page.

    To have a front page display of images you have to set featured images in each post of the required size and the theme will do the rest. If you do not set featured images then you get the gray boxes.

    If you prefer with Suburbia, you can enlarge and feature your most important posts by marking them as Sticky posts. You can have only two posts with featured images in them display there side by side. To have front page image display you need to set a featured image to each post. The size of the featured image does matter. The featured image works best with images at least 350 by 248 (width, height).

    If you don’t see the Featured Image module on your Add New or Edit Post page, please make sure you’ve selected Featured Image in your Screen Options. http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options

    While I’m not an expert on the Suburbia theme, I’m not sure that is accurate. I did not set anything as featured and Suburbia displayed my images on the front page of my test blog exactly how the OP appears to want them to display:

    I simply inserted the images as described in my first post.

    I apologize. I used a copy and paste from when the theme was first introduced and it’s not accurate. I don’t have time to read the source code on the OP’s posts and whether or not images have been set in the posts or not. Please feel free to do that.

    @monkeybutler

    Timethief is correct.

    The images on the monkeybutler link are all actually featured images (confirmed via firebug).

    On my test blog, the top picture for each post on the front page must be a “featured” image.

    On a sort of “off topic” note:
    custom excerpts work, and many of my posts use them, and In most themes with an active custom excerpt on category and archive pages, the image one uses in the custom excerpt will act as a featured image.
    (Chateau and Imbalace2 are a couple of examples) Not so in Suburbia.

    I am still confused? So what you are saying is that you need to feature every photo to have it show up on the main page? Is there a better page style that shows every image without all the hubbub of clicking this or featuring that…i am not tech savvy so I need the simplest style of posting with the best look for photograph blogs…Any help and reply is appreciated…Free photography in Houston for the best answer provider!!

    OK.
    A second thought occurred to me:
    on a post with only one image that single image does in fact appear on the front page. That is, a post with a single image makes that image act as the featured image whether or not one sets it as a featured image. Adding more images without designating which is the featured image results in the grey non-imgage-ugly-block with the post title.

    There has to be something more going on with this situation than that though, because the OP has posts with only one image that are not showing up with an image thumb on the front page:

  • So what you are saying is that you need to feature every photo to have it show up on the main page?

    No. That is not correct.

    As I said previously, I made basic image posts and the thumbnail showed up on the front page as it was supposed to. I did not do anything out of the ordinary or have to set anything as “featured”.

    @cmwestley

    In Suburbia, if you choose one image to be featured that is the one which will appear on the front page above the first part of your post, then you won’t see that grey rectangle.

    Usually I look at the OP’s blog and in this case I failed. When I just now looked, I see you have some posts with just one picture in them and it does not appear on the front page…

    So for a third thought, it appears that those posts of yours are using the “image” post format. Apparently that prevents the single image in a post from appearing instead of the “featured” image. If you changed the post format to “standard” then the one image would appear. Or if you made that image “featured” it would appear on the front page.

  • There has to be something more going on with this situation than that though, because the OP has posts with only one image that are not showing up with an image thumb on the front page:

    Quoting myself here because the OP is updating their site and my examples above are now not correct as they ARE showing thumbs on the front page.

    But in any case, it appears that the issue has been solved on some level at least as the thumbnail images are appearing.

    @monkeybutler,

    No. That is not correct.

    It is correct, but as I thought about it, it was not complete.

    Yes, the OP has made them “featured” images.

    “To have a front page display of images you have to set featured images in each post”.
    That’s not correct.
    “Adding more images without designating which is the featured image results in the grey non-imgage-ugly-block”.
    That’s not correct either.

    The front page in Suburbia displays the image you’ve set as a featured image or the first image you have uploaded via the Add Media tool of the post.

    “Is there a better page style that shows every image without all the hubbub of clicking this or featuring that”.
    If you wish to display the whole content of each post on the front page, you need a more conventional theme. For prominent images you can select a wide theme such as Nishita.

  • Using this as a test:

    multiple images!

    Suburbia had no problem grabbing the first one as the thumbnail without my setting anything as featured.

    In any case, it may be a moot point as the OP seems to be making posts with thumbnails now. So whatever method they are using is working.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ah ha! One more variable to this confusing mix:
    The images must be uploaded within the post, so then the first one is “chosen” unless there is a designated “featured image” and would that be using either the image post format or the standarad post format or either or both…

    Things used to be so straight-forward…
    do you want cream in your coffee or not?

    edit for clarification:
    The pictures in my test were from the media library, not uploaded directly to the post so they were attached to some other post. Not attached to the new post…

  • Unknown's avatar

    @monkeybutler
    Change the post format to “image” rather than “standard” and you’ll see what I meant…

  • @1tess

    You are absolutely right.

    What’s odd is that, if you go through the dashboard, Suburbia doesn’t actually have the “format” module that would let you choose the different post formats (unless I’m missing it somehow). You have to click “add new” from the taskbar at the top of the page while logged in and viewing your blog in order to get the option to make an image format post.

    So at the end of the day, we’re all right! Pizza all around to celebrate.
