Thumbnailed front page with links to categories.

I know there’s probably a simple procedure, but I’ve not been able to find it:
I’m building a portfolio site and I would like the main page to be a grid of thumbnails with titles that link to categories of work. I have a bunch of posts categorized and ready to go, but I haven’t had any luck figuring out how to do the rest. Any advice on how to accomplish this?

Also, if for some reason it would be smarter to do pages and sub-pages instead of categories and subcategories, I’m all ears.

And in case it’s relevant, I’m competent, but not a coder.

    Hello!

What you could do is create a page on your site labeled “Portfolio”. This page could listed as a menu option.
When a user clicks on the page, you could display photos in a grid template. These photos once a user clicks on them could take the user to the portfolio of said work.
