Thumbnails in media library and images are not displayed

When I upload images the thumbnail is not shown in the overview of the media library and even not on the page.
All image versions are created, I see it in the uploads folder via FTP.I just installed WP on that server (switchplus.ch) and activated the theme Author. I also tried to change the theme to a default. No difference. Later updated theme to Author Pro. No change.
I updated PHP on the server to 5.6 stable. No change.What else can cause that?

You are not referring to a wordpress.COM hosted blog but to a wordpress.ORG install that we do not host and do not provide support for.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. It might be a problem with file permissions.
They should be 750 for folders and 640 for files.You can change those in an FTP client like FileZilla.
