Tiled galleries not displaying properly on 'older posts'

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there

I have created a travel blog with photos which show as tiled galleries on pages linked to tags. On a page, once I click on ‘Older posts’, the tiled galleries don’t display properly. The newer posts work fine. How can I fix this? Is there a way to have next/previous buttons?

    Many thanks!
    Anna

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Anna, could you link to the posts that are having issues? I spot checked a few and the tiled galleries are working alright for me.

Thanks for getting back to me. The problem only happens when there are too many posts on a page and the ‘older posts’ button appears at the bottom of the page. I’d tried to limit the posts so that this didn’t happen.

If you go to the ‘Europe’ tab at the top, scroll to the bottom, click on ‘older posts’, then view the tiled galleries for the older posts. These are the posts that aren’t displaying properly.

I’m happy to send screenshots if useful.

  • It took a look at the posts in question, and those aren’t actually entered as galleries, they’re just individually added photos with some alignment choices, but not proper galleries: https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/tiled-gallery-block/

Hello, thanks for getting back to me. I’m not sure which posts you are looking at, but you will see what I mean when you click into the actual posts.

As an example, go to ‘Europe’ tab, scroll down to the bottom, click ‘Older posts’, and refer to the post titled ‘Driving around the beautiful island of Malta’. This was created as a tiled gallery. If you click into the post, you will see how it should display. Same deal with ‘Three sunny days in London’.

Most of the posts have been created as tiled galleries. They display fine if they are new enough to show without clicking ‘older posts’, but the formatting no longer work properly once I have to click ‘older posts’ to view them.

  • I’m not sure which posts you are looking at, but you will see what I mean when you click into the actual posts.

Could you link us to a few of the posts you’re having trouble with? That way we’ll for sure be looking at the same things. Two of us have looked through several post and weren’t able to find it, but the actual links to the individual posts should help.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello again,

Europe page (this page links anything tagged ‘Europe’)
    https://bgf.travel.blog/tag/europe/
This page currently only shows the newest 12 posts. The rest can be viewed by clicking ‘older posts’ at the bottom of the page. The posts that aren’t displaying properly are those that aren’t the latest 12 and which only display when clicking older posts.

    Some posts to compare are:
    https://bgf.travel.blog/2019/05/30/driving-around-the-beautiful-island-of-malta/
    https://bgf.travel.blog/2019/05/25/london-revisited/

This page shows you what the ‘older’ posts should look like:
https://bgf.travel.blog/tag/europe/page/2/ (This page can’t be accessed via the blog – I manually type in the url)

    Hopefully this is clearer?

  • Hi there,

I think that what you’re describing is due to the fact that you’re using a few galleries in the same post instead of just using one.

A screenshot of what you’re seeing can be helpful too. Just grab a screenshot and upload it to your Media Library for us to see. Here’s how to take a screenshot:

    @Staff,

I see exactly what @starlet221 is describing. If you click on the “Older Posts” link at the bottom of the first page of the “Europe” tag archive page, https://bgf.travel.blog/tag/europe/, then most of the posts that are added have somewhat disordered tiles in the galleries, some worse than others. None of the posts displays more than one gallery.

    Examples:
Driving Around the Beautiful Island of Malta — https://snag.gy/7QpA4e.jpg
Three Sunny Days In London! — https://snag.gy/tBDU3c.jpg
Day Trip to Gozo (Malta’s Sister Island) — https://snag.gy/3M9oST.jpg

Each of the above posts displays on “page 1” (https://bgf.travel.blog/tag/europe/page/1/) after clicking the “Older Posts” link, whereas the same posts display on “page 2” (https://bgf.travel.blog/tag/europe/page/2/), with the tiles of the gallery not exhibiting the same disorder, if you manually add the “page 2” to the tag archive URL.

I obtained the above results using the latest Firefox browser.

    @fstat,

I think that what you’re describing is due to the fact that you’re using a few galleries in the same post instead of just using one.

Possibly. There are spaces between groups of images in some cases that suggest more than one gallery might be included in a post.

@fstat @musicdoc1 – As far as I know it’s been possible to insert multiple galleries in the same post/page since a long time ago (2012).

FWIW – I’m also seeing the tiled mosaic galleries broken up when looking at the Europe tag page 2 (especially the Malta post), but when opening the post in single view the images arrange themselves neatly in the tiled mosaic.

  • Hi there,

I can see what you mean, and it looks like it’s a known issue with the Tiled Gallery block and Infinite Scroll. And just to clarify, while you do have Infinite Scroll switched off on your site, the extra posts loading when you click the Older Posts button runs the same code that Infinite Scroll runs automatically.

This block comes from the Jetpack plugin, and the developers at Jetpack are already aware of this. At this point I can’t tell you when it will be fixed, but we’ll update here once we have any more info.

Hi all, thanks all for your responses!

Any thoughts on what a potential workaround might be for this issue? For example, is it possible to replace the ‘Older posts’ button with a Next button that links to the next page (https://bgf.travel.blog/tag/europe/page/2/).

    Many thanks!

  • No, there’s no workaround. Our developers are working on a fix and we’ll update here once we have more information.
