Tiled Gallery Posts as Single Column
-
Using Orvis as my theme, my tiled galleries look correct during editing but when I preview, the images post in a single column at full size.
This feature was working fine two days ago, then suddenly it started doing this. I’ve changed to other themes with tiled galleries and they preview correctly; switch back to Orvis and they go back to single column.
Would appreciate any help.

Hi there, I’ve just created a tiled mosaic on my test site using the Orvis theme and wasn’t able to replicate this issue.
Here’s temporary screenshots of both the gallery being created and the published post
Although it looks like you haven’t yet launched your site, please post here a direct link to where you see this happening and then add the MODLOOK tag to the Tags section of this forum thread’s sidebar for Staff assistance. Thanks.

Hi Jennifer.
Here are links to two test galleries.
https://lightandshadowimages.wordpress.com/portfolio/test/
https://lightandshadowimages.wordpress.com/portfolio/test-ii/On my screen, in both cases, it looks like they begin drawing correctly and then suddenly change into the single column display.
Thanks for your assistance.

Hi there, it’s because they are Portfolio pages and not blog posts. Here’s what the Orvis theme description says:
Orvis will extract your images, videos or galleries from the content and will display these at full width on larger screens on the single portfolio pages.
Reading that I could have understood that to mean the Gallery would be full width, not the images themselves, but that looks to be the case.

Thank you, Jennifer and Liz, for taking the time to respond.
To a certain extent what you’re suggesting does makes sense but for a day-and-a-half the galleries functioned as I had expected, with the tiled galleries appearing on the pages and the individual images linking to a full-sized image that included the title, the caption, and a selection of metadata including exposure factors and copyright information. Also, as I had mentioned in the OP, the editing interface continues to display the tiled gallery as well, which is fairly odd from a WYSIWYG perspective.

Hello again, It does sound strange. I will have some time later for testing and will come back to you.
Meantime, if you don’t want your site visible to search engines and visitors until you are ready to launch, you might want to change your site visibility from Public to Private: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Hello again, which Editor are you currently using, the new Block Editor or the Classic Editor? Please also let us know what browser and OS you are using.
Here are the results of my tests:
When I inserted a tiled mosaic in a Portfolio project using the Classic Editor, the tiled mosaic displayed as a tiled mosaic on every screen (editing, preview and site). It did not change to single column of images. (temp screenshot)
Staff: https://teachandtestsite.wordpress.com/portfolio/orvis-portfolio-gallery/If I used the new Block Editor’s Gallery block to insert the images in a Portfolio project, the images displayed as a tiled mosaic in the editing space and in preview. However, when viewing on the site, the images changed to a single column of images.
If I used the new Block Editor and inserted the images as a tiled mosaic using the Classic block, they also displayed as a tiled mosaic on every screen (editing, preview and site). (temp screenshot)
Staff: https://ablogdemo.wordpress.com/portfolio/orvis-portfolio-gallery/Staff: on the portfolio post on ablogdemo, the Classic block with a Gallery is displaying above the Gallery block, but if you look at the Portfolio post in the edit screen, their positions are actually reversed. The Classic block with Gallery is inserted below the Gallery block.
All the above were tested only in FF v65.0.2 and Win10Pro

Hi there,
If you’re using the block editor, then this is a known issue but not one that can be fixed – the special gallery features for portfolio pages in Orvis were designed long before the block editor was conceived, and they do not work with the block editor. There are no plans to add support for the block editor to this theme at this time.
For this theme’s portfolio galleries to work as described in the theme documentation you’ll need to switch to the classic editor instead. Or if you prefer the galleries to display as a tiled gallery rather than the full-width layout this theme uses, you can use the classic block, as @justjennifer has confirmed in her testing above that the classic block will display tiled galleries the regular way, rather than using the theme’s special layout.
Staff: on the portfolio post on ablogdemo, the Classic block with a Gallery is displaying above the Gallery block, but if you look at the Portfolio post in the edit screen, their positions are actually reversed. The Classic block with Gallery is inserted below the Gallery block.
This is related to the tiled gallery issue, and is caused by the theme trying to extract the images from the tiled gallery block to display them full-width, but it’s not trying to do the same for images in the gallery in the classic block. I’ll add this detail to the bug report on this, but fixing it would also require adding block editor support to the theme, which our theme team has already indicated they’re not planning to do in this case.

Hey there,
This appears to be a unique issue only affecting the Orvis Theme. However, we’ll keep everyone updated if similar issues are discovered with other themes.
Thanks,

Thanks for your response, Jennifer. I was beginning to think that perhaps I imagined the whole experience.
I’m currently using the Blask theme which I’ve modified to have a look somewhat similar to that of Orvis but there are certain features — such as access to the image captions — that are not available.
I’m gonna give Orvis another go this weekend.

You’re welcome. So now we know as long as you use the Block Editor for Orvis’ Portfolio, you’ll want to stick to the Classic Block when inserting a tiled mosaic Gallery. Cheers! :)
