TIME-SENSITIVE Waiting 3 days for response through live chat
-
A Codeable developer asked me to reach out to WordPress.com support about my file permission settings. Currently set to 0. Should be set to 644.
I am a PRO level user without SFTP access. After an initial acknowledgement to my request 3 days ago from a Happiness Engineer there has been no further response. I do not have SFTP access. Under my Codeable contract I only have 3 to 4 days left to resolve bugs. Can someone from WordPress.com support get back to me? Thank you

We have a guide on setting up SFTP that you can follow here:
SFTP
Essentially, the steps are the following
- Visit the Sites page in your dashboard.
- Click on the site title in the list of your sites.
- Click on the “Server Settings” tab on the site overview page.
- Under “SFTP/SSH credentials“, click the button labeled “Create credentials” to create and copy your site’s SFTP username and password.
- You will also see a toggle button labeled “Enable SSH access for this site” to click and enable SSH and use WP-CLI.
-
Hello, I already found this guide and I got my credentials.
5. You will also see a toggle button labeled “Enable SSH access for this site” to click and enable SSH and use WP-CLI.
There is no toggle button to Enable SSH access.
My only two options are to toggle to enable global cache or clear cache, and a button to reset plugins and themes. According to the wordpress.com support bot, I do not have SFTP access.
So, can you change the file transfer setting from 0 to 644? This is why I requested support and have been waiting for several days now. Thank you.

According to the wordpress.com support bot, I do not have SFTP access. We can confirm that your site chozehconnections.com has SFTP, you can share credentials with the developer so that they can gain access and make necessary changes.
Once credentials are created, you can use a client to gain access. We suggest a few different clients with instructions here:
https://developer.wordpress.com/docs/developer-tools/sftp/#set-up-a-client
SSH is not required to change file permissions. SSH is available on sites with the Business or Commerce plan:
https://developer.wordpress.com/docs/developer-tools/ssh/
Usually, your folders and files should have their permissions configured to 755. Altering these permissions might cause your website to malfunction. Additionally, you might notice that symlinked files seem to have varying permissions. This is a typical occurrence and is not adjustable.

staff-danywpress Thanks so much for the detailed response and instructions. I will follow up with my developer, and also find out from Tutor LMS if they can support permissions set at 755 instead of 644. Would you please leave this thread open for another 2-3 days in case there are more questions regarding this? If resolved before then, I will provide the update. Thank you.

staff-danywpress so now I found out that there is no .htaccess file in wordpress.com because you use nginx. This is why it shows .htaccess file setting at 0.
There has to be some kind of fix for this because every time I save a setting in Tutor LMS, I am getting a warning to check .htaccess file permissions.
-
My understanding here is that you are trying to solve an issue with saving settings on the Tutor LMS plugin?
Can you share the link of the page where you are trying to save settings and also share which settings you are trying to save? Are you following a specific guide or documentation?
-
Yes,
https://chozehconnections.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=tutor_settings
Toggle any setting on and save. Off again and save. The htaccess warning pops up with any setting change. Thank you.

Per Tutor LMS support, if I use their video/image content protection options (prevent hotlinking of videos and right click copy protection), these settings require .htaccess modification. Since WordPress.com does not have use .htaccess file permissions, I will get an error. Tutor software is trying to make changes to .htaccess which does not exist.
The simplest solution is for me to turn off copy protection in Tutor LMS whenever I wish to make a change to Tutor settings. I can turn it back on after I make the settings changes. Thank you.

Sounds good, it’s good to hear that you have a workaround figured out. Let us know if you have any other questions.
