tinkering with theme

    Hi guys–
I have two Front Page sites (few support it now), so I’m used to designing from scratch. I’d like to create a Word Press site and I’m wondering how much I can alter my choice. I hate just accepting what’s handed to me.
The theme I’m looking at is 79 bucks a year. Without delving into it I notice “custom designing” is 30 extra, which make it expensive. My question is, How much can I change a theme without upgrading to “Custom?” Can I change fonts, move text and picture placements around, enlarge and reduce areas, etc.? Meaning altering it to my satisfaction. Words of wisdom will be appreciated. Thanks.
    Martin

You can change the CSS of a theme, but not its functionality.

Can I change fonts, move text and picture placements around, enlarge and reduce areas, etc.?

Yes. You cannot add sidebars if they don’t exist, change the fact the category page shows excerpts to one that doesn’t, and things like that.
