TipJoy plugin
-
Any word on whether the TipJoy (http://tipjoy.com/) plug-in will become available to wordpress.com members? The javascript method of adding a button doesn’t work because wordpress.com strips out all java script and iframes.
Just bringing it to your attention and hoping for an ETA.
Thanks!

Hi, I’m cofounder of Tipjoy. WordPress.com integration is really up to them. I’ve asked multiple times through contacts of those at wordpress.com, and I’ve asked people that are interested to contact them directly.
Right now, you can create a link to your content’s page on Tipjoy, or to your account. For example, you can see my tipping history and leave me a tip on http://tipjoy.com/u/ivankirigin
It takes you away from the page you’re on, but it’s better than nothing :)

i doubt wordpress.com will allow a widget for such a fishy business.
# What happens to unclaimed funds?
# We will contact the earners on a periodic basis (not so often as to become annoying, but every so often as a reminder) to let them know there’s money waiting for them, and help them get signed up with Tipjoy. However, we cannot guarantee that a person you give money to will sign up for Tipjoy and claim the money that’s been left to them. Since money given is not refundable, as long as the money remains ‘unclaimed’ it will remain with us indefinitely. We encourage you to try and convince the people you’ve tipped to sign up with Tipjoy to claim their money.
-
I wouldn’t say that’s a fishy business model. It seems to be a decent rationale, particularly in this case. Any one that would have a TipJoy button/link on their page would be already signed up for the service, thus no worrying about what happens to unclaimed funds at all.
Others that are generous enough to go out of their way to tip without a button or link are providing a financial incentive for the person to sign up with TipJoy.
It’s the same thing if you were a waiter and somebody leaves you your tip in a check. You are inconvenienced because you have to go to the bank and you have to have an account at most banks for them to cash your check. Now you’ll say that if the waiter refuses to cash the check the original person that wrote the check will still have that money, which is accurate. However, we’re talking about 10 cent tips that a person has already decided to part with. I’m sure they won’t miss it.
Overall, the benefit of encouraging great posts and perhaps financing a separate domain would out-weigh the potential issue you point out which would never be an issue with anybody using the TipJoy button or banner as they would already have an account set up.
@bubel, ikirigin: Thanks for the advice!

if one wants a tip jar, a paypal button – without one more party cashing in on each transaction – just works fine. the whole business model of tipjoy smells fishy to me. period. it would smell less fishy if they’d offer a refund for unclaimed funds.
-
Fair enough. Using the Paypal generated button doesn’t work on WordPress.com because <form> and <input> html tags are stripped out.
Open to suggestions.

Add a PayPal donate button.

@xanthippe: Thanks!

there’s no need to use paypals code, the button itself with a link to one’s paypal address is enough. IF this would be fine with wordpress’ TOS, which would be the next question. and if it would be fine, it would make much more sende to make a paypal widget available than something like tipjoy.
-
oops, you sent the second post while i was struggling with the english language… *g* (yikes! “sende” should be “sense”!)
but… you’re welcome! no need for a third party to take 10% of the tip, right? :))

Donations via paypal are fine, it’s even in the FAQ’s here: http://faq.wordpress.com/2008/06/23/how-do-i-add-a-paypal-button/ .
-
well, if donations are fine, that’s great! maybe i came across as someone who’s against donations or tips to bloggers – i’m not. i just think it’s enough that paypal gets its (deserved) share.
