Title disappears

The title seems to be disappearing from my article as soon as I post. It happened last month and again just now. Never happened before. Maybe some upgrade or something that isn’t quite compatible with what I’ve got?

Can you please tell me which editor you’re using? The one at wordpress.com/posts or the WP-Admin editor?
Did you add the title before you wrote the content of the post, or right before you published? If you added it right before you published, it’s possible you clicked Publish right as we were trying to autosave the title. Can you please edit the post and add a title, then make sure the Save indicator top left turns into “Saved” before you click the Update button in the editor?

Thanks for this. I presume I’m using the wordpress.com/posts editor. Seems the issue has fixed itself though. I actually typed in the title and it’s stayed there. What happened is that I’ve been reproducing various articles I wrote for a couple of writing sites that are now gone and I have always just copied and pasted titles and the body from the Word doc where I have the articles stored, then added tags etc. Always worked okay. But with all the updates/upgrades around the place (to WordPress, my computer, etc), my Word document text has probably become incompatible with WordPress’s title bar when drafting; titles would keep disappearing when I added text to the body, added tags, etc. So I’ll remember to actually type in the title.

Okay, that’s a helpful bit of info. This doesn’t really have to do with updates, but rather with an innate incompatibility between HTML, and Rich Text Format used by word processors like MS Word. When pasting rich text into an HTML-only editor like ours, you sometimes copy some invisible formatting that the HTML editor can’t handle, and that can lead to issues. Other times it works perfectly.
To avoid this, make sure to use the Paste As Text button in the editor – it’s on the second line of the toolbar and looks like a clipboard with a T on it. That should strip out any incompatible code that gets copied over from Word.
That won’t work for titles, though, so typing them out might be the better course here.
