Title field on Posts or Pages lists
-
On the list of either Posts or Pages
(e.g. https://orgstrat.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php)
the title field goes to 1 space in width. Thus, I can not read a list, because each entry is so tall that only one per screen can show.
This has happened eventually on every site I have, even the .org sites.
I am fairly sure I am not doing anything to cause this, as I never attempt to influence the basic coding or formatting. I just fill in blank fields with content.
Any fixes or advice? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
If you’re using a browser to access the site, does the same thing happen with different browsers? Have you updated you normal browser recently? Try some of the suggestions in the Browser Issues support page.

I’ve remembered what caused that issue when it used to happen to me, and I was just able to reproduce it on my desktop PC. The cause in my case, and possibly in yours, is that the screen resolution setting isn’t compatible with the monitor size. My recommended setting is 1280 x x 1024. At that setting the full post titles display on a line or at most two at WP admin dashboard > Posts > All Posts. If I change it to 1024 x 768, then the title will display vertically, with one or two words per line. It appears that there’s space for only about 9 characters or so per line, and words aren’t broken (hyphenated). The lowest setting I have is 800 x 600. At this setting, the titles display one character per line, producing a column of single letters.

Yes, any browser, I think. Anyway, Mozilla and Opera for sure. Just now tried on Chrome and failed to log in. Oh well. Sorry.
Only the one “Title” (actual title of the post) is reduced to 1 character wide. The other titles are wide. “Tags”, for instance, about 40 spaces wide, more than needed.
I am willing to experiment with screen resolution, but will need direction on how, since I’ve never changed that.
Thanks.

You’re welcome.
The other titles are wide. “Tags”, for instance, about 40 spaces wide, more than needed.
That’s different than the results I obtain. In my tests, all of the fields are narrowed as I decrease the resolution, but not to the same degree as the title field. At 800 x 600, the title field line is one character wide, while the tags field seems to be limited to about 16 characters per line.
Instructions for changing screen resolution would depend upon the operating system you are using. I’ll let staff handle that. Please wait for staff to respond. You may subscribe to the topic in the sidebar here.

Hi there,
Are you perhaps resizing your browser window to be smaller than the screen? I can reproduce this if I make my browser window smaller. It appears the title column adjusts with smaller screens, but not the other columns, causing this to happen.
If you shrink the screen far enough the layout should adjust to first collapse the sidebar menu, and then to hide some of the other columns. But inbetween there’s a spot where it displays the titles the way you describe.
I’ve checked this on a self-hosted site as well, and it happens there also which means this is an issue with the core WordPress software, not just WordPress.com. That also means a fix will need to come from that end.
What you can try in the meantime is to collapse the sidebar menu manually using the button at the bottom of the menu, or you can click on Screen Options top-right and hide the columns you don’t need/use.
