Titles have been deleted

I Categorized all my posts and now the Titles have all been removed! I need my titles back please!
Please help me. I’ve worked VERY hard to select my titles VERY carefuly. Tonight I went in and Categorized most of my posts and it deleted my titles! I need them all back please!
Also, it changed the date of each post. I’d like them all back to the original dates and reverse chronological order, with latest post shown first. All I wanted to do was categorize the posts!!! Please help restore my information to original content. Then let me know if possible to categorize the posts without making those undesireable changes. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Adding categories should not remove post titles. Looking through your monthly archives, it looks like only posts in September 2013 have been affected. If you are on the Posts page (where all posts are listed), do you see the titles?
Regardless, I will tag this for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to this thread so that you will see their response and due to the long holiday weekend in the US it may be a little longer than usual. Unless you have new information, don’t bump this thread as threads marked for Staff assistance are normally handled on an age basis, ie oldest first.

I looked at the site, rain. There are no post formats with Enterprise. (And even if there were, the titles would still show up on single view posts. They don’t.)
-
Correct, adding Categories should NOT remove Titles, that’s why this is a problem.
And yes they are also removed from Posts page.
And yes it removed the ORIGINAL dates of all posts making them APPEAR to be all from Sept 1, 2013 – the date that I ONLY added Categories. So not only are the original dates removed, the posts are no longer reverse chronological order. All I wanted to do was add Categories, the same way I’ve gone back and added Tags to old posts, without making ANY other changes. It did not allow me to do this.

Hi mmmdallas,
Are you referring to the site at mmmdallas.wordpress.com? When I go to your site, I see titles for all of your posts.
If you have added them back, that’s great, but it’s difficult for me now to see which posts were affected.
Were these all previously published posts, or were they saved drafts that you published on Sept. 1?
It would be very helpful if you could walk me through the process of how you created each of these posts, when you saved them, and when you published them. Did you write them all in the post editor and and save as you went? Did you write them in the quick post window from your admin bar? Were the posts already published when you went in and added categories, or were they drafts at that time? Did you add the categories in the post editor or in a quick edit window?
I’d like to try to reproduce this behavior, since I haven’t see anything like this happen before, but I need to know a lot more details before I can do so.
Also, please let me know if it continues to happen.
As far as your existing posts go, you can go to your All Posts view and update the publication dates by hovering over the post titles and using the Quick Edit option.
-
@jackiedana, I can confirm that the OP has replaced all the post titles for September’s posts, but they all still appear as having been published on September 1.
As per the OP, the disappearing titles and change of post date came about following her having added categories to her posts.
Personally I suspect a bulk editing error, but that is just a guess.
I realize this is not enough for you to go on, but thought to throw that out there.
-
Hi justjennifer,
Thanks. I didn’t disbelieve the lack of post titles, but this is a hard one to track down, especially since the post revisions don’t cover these items. The bulk editing idea is interesting.
I’ll need a lot more details before I can look into this further, though, since I would want to try to reproduce the error and I can’t right now based on what little I do know.

Hi all,
First, I do thank you each for your efforts to help, but this is most frustrating because none of the assumptions made above are accurate. So I will try to be more clear.ALL CAPS are added for emphasis and clarity. Please note I do not intend to be yelling at anyone. And I thank you all for your assistance.
I did NOT bulk edit. That was NOT available to me. Sure would be been handy if it was available.
I was in the QUICK EDIT feature of the ALL POSTS view and that was the ENTIRE problem.
These were posts that have been published over the past 2 years. NOT drafts.
In the QUICK EDIT feature, as I selected CATEGORIES, it REMOVED the TITLES.
Furthermore, it REMOVED the ORIGINAL DATES of the posts because as soon as I clicked on UPDATE, it changed all the dates to Sept 1 (or 9/2, since I did this over a 2 day window).
ALL I wanted to do was CATEGORIZE existing posts. Not re-publish. Just CATEGORIZE. NOT DELETE TITLES. The Quick Edit feature was the problem.I’ve always been able to ADD TAGS to exising posts in a very easy manner and expected to be able to do the same thing with CATEGORIES, but had a very different experience.
Now, the reason it appears as it only affected SEpt 1 & 2 published posts is because IT CHANGED ALL THE ORIGINAL DATES!
And the TITLES have been RESTORED by ME because I spent HOURS yesterday clicking 1 screen at a time, researching Original Titles and reentering them. It was PAINSTAKING. And a WordPress Administrator should be able to fix this very easily, but I don’t know how to access that person.
The fix I believe requires a WordPress Administrator. Someone who can see into the back end of the program, can see the HISTORY of when each of these posts was originally published (something I would like to have re-instated) and have ORIGINAL TITLES restored, which is also available in the EDIT history and easier for an ADMIN to access than it was for me.
Furthermore, I also changed the APPEARANCE of my blog (added background color, photo on left side, added a couple of widgets) and yesterday I wasn’t even able to ACCESS my DASHBOARD! I haven’t tried today because the entire experience has been awful and upsetting and a gigantic waste of time.
I sure hope I can get back into my Dashboard because I have VALUABLE DRAFTS yet to be published, but I am still too upset to test this. Would very much like to be contacted directly by a WordPress Administrator is that is possible.
I don’t know what an “OP” is. Please do not use abbreviations or your message will not be understood by all who are trying to resolve.

Hi mmmdallas,
Thanks so much for the detailed explanation. This is unusual behavior, and it should certainly not be happening to you, so I’d like to try to sort it out.
I tried to reproduce this behavior on a test blog and everything worked as expected, so I’m not sure what has happened in your case.
Is this still happening to you – in other words, if you were to go to a new post and choose a category, does the date change and title disappear? Does this happen when you hit the update button or as soon as you click on a category box?
What browser, and browser version, are you currently running?
Do you have third-party cookies enabled for your browser:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/Are you able to access your site/Dashboard now, or if not, can you do so if you switch to another browser?
If this behavior reoccurs, please let us know before you change everything back, and we may be able to assist you further.

Jackie,
Thank you for offering to help. I cannot tell if you are a lay person or a WordPress administrator, but I’m assumming you are just trying to be a helpful person to me.
Yes the problem is STILL happening, which is why it would be most helpful to be in direct contact with a WordPress Administrator. Because I don’t want to keep continuing the problem with testing it.I went to a Published Post from 5/26/09 entitled Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body. I Categorized it, the Title then went away. Not sure if before or after I chose Update. Sorry, but I was interrupted by a work call while writing this message and cannot recall.
I’m on Explorer. Not sure what version.
Not sure how to enable cookies. Sorry, I’m not that technical.Good news is I can access my Dashboard. That was my error. When I changed the Appearance, I didn’t know to hover on the right side rather than the left as I was used to.

jackiedana is Staff. She requires specific details re: your computing environment to be able to assist you with sorting your issue. Work through the following drill and report your results back in this thread./
1. If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.
2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html
3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/
(a) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
(b) Make sure that you have both third-party cookies enabled and JavaScript enabled on your browser.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654(c) Disable all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily.
(d) Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questions
4. Try using another browser.
5. If you are not successful let us know:
(a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
(b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/
(c) And what any error reports you receive state. -
P.S. Is any of the content in the blog imported content?
I’m asking because when content is imported from Blogger ie. from a blogspot blog into a WordPress.com blog the titles frequently go missing. -
Thanks timethief.
To mmmdallas, I’m sorry I am asking for so many details from you, but this is not an issue I have seen before, and I need to figure out if it is something happening on your end – a browser setting, or an older browser that doesn’t allow all of our functionality, for example – or something on our end. Because I wasn’t able to reproduce the behavior, to come up with a solution for you I need as much information as possible so I can either pinpoint the error on our end or suggest something else for you to try.
It would be VERY helpful for me if you would try timethief’s suggestions. I would be most interested to know if it is happening only in IE (and which version you’re using) or if the problem occurs when you use Firefox or Chrome. It would also help to check to make sure you are not running IE in compatibility mode, as that can interfere with WordPress.com’s functionality.

Thank you all, again.
I will seek my husband’s help this evening with all of timethief’s suggestions, since they are a bit daunting to me.
I appreciate all of your efforts to help me and don’t want to steal more of your time than is needed.
And no, the content is not imported. I just use WordPress and write original content. -
Hi there,
I want to thank you, in advance, for being game enough to work through the troubleshooting drill so jackiedana can try to duplicate your set up and replicate the same issue you experience with the disappearing titles. When she can do that the solution to this perplexing problem will be found. -
@mmmdallas I do apologize for not being clearer concerning the use of “OP”, which as raincoaster has pointed out, means “original poster” or the person who started the forum thread.
You can distinguish Staff from community members answering your questions by the frame around their username, together with the words, “Staff” or “Happiness Engineer” and such like.
timethief, raincoaster and I (and others) are experienced volunteers in this mostly peer-to-peer forum and have chased down many user problems over the years. Your particular problem is certainly an unusual one, so indeed thank you in advance for your patience and willingness to work through this with Staff so that hopefully your problem will be quickly resolved.
