to askimet or not?

HI just flummoxed that I just don’t seem to be getting any comments. But Askimet notes that several folks have commented but it has blocked them. Is there a way to temporarily review what they have blocked in the hopes that the spam filter they use might be also catching “real” comments?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, of course. In your Dashboard, under Comments you can check to see if the real comments are there and mark them “not spam” so that Akismet learns. Be wary, though. Some comments by spammers are cleverly worded as to sound like a regular comment, you can nearly always tell by the website they link to in their name or by their email.

If real commenters are being caught repeatedly as spam, you should direct that person to http://akismet.com/contact/ and have them indicate “I think Akismet is catching my comments by mistake”.

I do want to mention that the blog linked to your username seems to be aggregating various posts from around wordpress.com without actually providing any relevant content, such as commentary. Those types of blogs can be targeted for suspension.

Thanks Jennifer! If I go under Comments you say I can find the “real” comments. Not sure how to do that. I will try right now.

As for your noting that my name is aggregating posts from around wordpress.com I suppose these would actually be spamming attempts?

Dashboard>Comments> look for the link to Spam. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/manage-comments/#viewing-your-comments

About aggregating other people’s posts, since I’m only a volunteer here in the forums, and not Staff, I can only speak from my experience from reading other forum threads. If your blog only links to other posts with absolutely no original content, then you might be looking at a Terms of Service violation. See here: http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

Thanks Jennifer. I have no intention to violate any agreements and have no idea how these are accumulating. I will have to read your links more carefully than I have time to do right now.

    Thanks again!

    Welcome and best wishes.

I wanted to see if Akismet might be blocking valid comments, too. So I deleted the widget. But when I went to my Dashboard, it said that the number of spam comments blocked had grown. How does Akismet sort out which are spam comments and which are valid?

  • Unknown's avatar

To be able to see the comments Akismet catches, you need to go to Settings > Discussion and check the option “Don’t discard spam on old posts”.

Akismet is built into all wp.com blogs and you can’t deactivate it. The only thing the widget does is display the number of comments Akismet has caught.

Akismet examines usernames, username links, other links, content, etc., and it’s very rarely wrong. And in the rare occasion that a spam comment escapes, you help Akismet learn and become even more accurate by marking the comment as spam instead of simply tashing it. See here as well:
    http://akismet.com/how/

Keep in mind that across all seven of my blogs I average one comment per 700 reads. If your blog doesn’t typically get more traffic than that, it’s unlikely you’ll get comments unless you’re part of a community that’s already connected and communicating, like a family or a sports team.

  • Unknown's avatar

The other thing with Akismet is that there are 100% known spammers out there where there is absolutely no doubt that the comment is spam. In those cases Akismet will not show you those (it has absolutely no doubt that they are spammers), but the caught spam count will go up. It also will not show you duplicates. Many times one spammer might hit your site with the exact same info and comment 3 or 4 times in 24 hours where everything is exactly the same. If there are 4 duplicates, but they are not on the “absolutely known to be spam” list then Akismet will show you one of them and hide the other 3.

i was concerned, as rbernato said above – so i tried justjennifer’s answer – but i can’t see the ‘real comments’ section. Any ideas?

Also, if a comment doesn’t match th post, is it likely to be spam?
eg. “I was suggested this blog by my cousin. I’m not sure whether this post is written by him as nobody else know such detailed about my problem. You’re amazing! Thanks!” …Under a timetable post?!!

  • Unknown's avatar

There’s no “real comments” section: Jennifer just meant you can check your spam folder to see if any real, no spam, comment has been caught by mistake.

Comments such as the one you quoted are 100% spam. You’ll even see the exact same stupid text again and again, with different usernames.

99.999999% chance it is spam –

I get lots of comments that have no relevance to the Post – they stay in the spam filter – many spammers are people that just put spam all day long on sites – other spam is done by bots and AI systems –

I get less than @raincoaster’s one comment per 700 visitors – just the nature of my site – people visit my site for specific info on boating and very few leave a comment or say thanks – but on average they view just under three pages per visit.

See here please and note the worst of all malicious spam containing malware and viruses, etc. is not sent to us. It would bring down many blogs if it were opened. Please read the Staff comments in this thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/akismet-issues?replies=15#post-436802

Also, if a comment doesn’t match th post, is it likely to be spam?

Yes the likelihood that it is spam is high. I don’t post any comments that are not directly related to my posts.

Cripes, thanks guys. Yeah, it’s clear now, i couldn’t tell spam from genuine. Just expected more comments is all. Too used to FB!
Can’t believe spammers get round Captcha. I never get it right until about the 3rd go.

    @jasbaku
    You’re welcome from me. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    @jasbaku – you be welcome

Also, don’t worry about the comments, write for whatever reason causes you to write and don’t worry about an approving comment from me.

    God luck with your blog.

Thanks yous! I’m getting better with practice at blog writing – didn’t realize it was such a skill. Getting some (genuine) good n’ helpful feedback too. Spammers are evil! – talk about not trusting false compliments.
