to backup files, will using the WordPress DB backup plugin suffice? or…
-
I have already downloaded and activated the WordPress DB backup Plugin
and did the backup and wanted to know if this will suffice?I feel i should do another backup up using a third party just incase, but i want to be secure about the platform i use.
I dont have a host server and i would like to download My Sql workbench as it’s recommended by you in the documentation for ‘backing up your database’
But is it a good choice and is it free?
What do you recommend?
:)

Hi there,
Plugins are not available on WordPress.com. They’re used to add features and functionality to self-hosted installations of WordPress.
Your blog on WordPress.com already includes functions and feature way beyond what is offered on a stock WordPress.org install.
Read more about this here:
http://support.wordpress.com/plugins/For more information on the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, please see:
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/If you require support for a self-hosted WordPress blog, you’ll need to visit the forums here:
http://wordpress.org/support/You might also want to check out VaultPress to backup and help secure your self-hosted blog:

Hi Chris,
Forgive me, i should have been more specific. Actually it’s nor for my blog, it’s for a client who i am helping figure things out and they have their a self hosted blog:
http://www.mzansistylecuisine.co.za/
guess i should have mentioned this earlier.
So now that i’m talking about a WordPress.org blog could you re-answer my question, please :).
I have never backed up a database/files before and because this isnt my blog i want to be cautious.
That being said, what is the easiest way to back up database and files (media included)?
As mentioned before i am trying to use MySQL workbench but is there not an easier way?
Thanks so much for your swift reply!

Okay, so it’s almost 2 hours later and firstly i’ve discovered my clients site is a site and not a blog :)
And it seems that i’ve been complicating everything (my brain) and i am now down to this option: FILEZILLA
-am i on the right track now :)?
Ok so now ive downloaded Filezilla onto my Mac and it’s asking for :
Host
Username
password
Port
and this is where i’m stuck as i don’t have these details.
How do i find out these details for my client’s site hosted by WordPress
http://www.mzansistylecuisine.co.za/
Please respond as soon as because at this point i cannot move forward……
Thanks.

Your client’s site is not hosted by WordPress, they are just using the WordPress blogging software.
You’ll need to contact your client’s hosting provider for FTP information.

Hey macmanx
The person who originally set up my clients blog has disappeared and i doubt my client knows who her host is or has any of this information??? Any suggestions what to do in this situation?

Is there no other way to backup this site without having the FTP information?
If you could give me an alternative (easy) solution this would be amazing…
thanks Guys for all the help so far.

There are plugins, like VaultPress, however http://www.mzansistylecuisine.co.za/ is a self-hosted WordPress.org blog, which we really can’t help with.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.
WordPress.org has complete support and documentation sites for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress via their Codex and Support Forums.

Ive contacted the host and without login details for host i cannot help client.
So is there no other way to backup the files and database on this site then?
-
It sure seems like it. As mentioned above, there are plenty of backup plugins out there. ValuPress is the one that I’m familiar with and it will give you everything: http://vaultpress.com/
There are other, but you’ll need to ask for support at http://wordpress.org/support/ for recommendations, since we really only support WordPress.com blogs here.

one last question, if i download a backup plugin which is compatible for the version of wordpress i’m using now but not with the latest WordPress i want to upgrade to, will i be able to still use the files backed up on plugin?
-
You should, but I’m not 100% sure. The folks over at http://wordpress.org/support/ would probably have a more definitive answer.
