  I entered an excerpt to my most recent post hoping to get it to appear as an abbreviated post of 55 words with … at the end to allow more posts to appear on a page, but it did not work. Can someone explain to me how to do this?

  Not sure if I understand the question. In your blog, you use the “more” function to cut a post and get a “read more” link at the bottom.

  Aha, I think you need to go to your dashboard > Settings > Reading where you can choose the number of blog posts you wish to appear per page.
