Tons of spam comments in the last 48 hours — what gives?

  • Unknown's avatar

Askimet has caught so many spams that if they didn’t I would have spent much time deleting them off. I used to get those looong pain in the *ss spam comments on my old blog, it was horrible. The total caught spams = about a third of my total traffic.

What is it though that seems to suddenly allow a flood of spam through? I ask because my blog has basically been inactive for a year and in that time maybe I got a half dozen spam comments which I then zapped. However, suddenly about a week ago I started getting several a day, I zap them all, but it’s strange that the volume has change so dramtically so quickly. My assumption would be that someone figured out how to beat the CAPTCHA, but maybe that’s not it.

There IS no CAPTCHA on WordPress.com. But yes, CAPTCHA as used on other blogs has been busted wide open, even the audio CAPTCHA for the blind.

If you’re talking about a WP.com blog, it could well be the Possibly Related Links feature; sulz suggested this might be it. What it does is put links to your blog on a lot of other blogs, and spambots follow links, so they’ll find even blogs that are inactive just by carrying out their automated functions. Just a theory though.

I’m just curious whether everyone is talking about spam that is getting through Askimet, meaning it must be manually deleted by the blog owner, or simply a drastic increase in the amount of spam that Askimet does catch. I ask because my spam hits have gone off the charts over the last ten days or so (from around 200 total in 6 months to over 750 as of right now) and I’ve really only had to manually remove maybe five of those new 550 spam messages. Again, just curious.
