too hard to figure out!

  • Unknown's avatar

Please help! WordPress is waaaay too complicated for me to figure out. I had no idea it would be this hard. I have been looking at it every day all this week and still have no clue how to set myself up. If there is some simple way for someone to walk me through it, I will be glad to know.
If not I would like to cancel my subscription, how do I do this?
    Thanks. Mary Lawton

  • Hi Mary,

Is there a specific problem you need help with? Happy to give you a hand.

Also, because you are new to WordPress.com, this guide may be helpful for you in getting the most out of our service as you move forward. It is written with beginners in mind, and covers all the essentials: http://learn.wordpress.com/

    Thanks for the additional info!

Hi and thanks for responding. Basically I can’t figure out how to create just my basic home page! I found myself at some page that offered all sorts of images for fees around $70. I don’t want those, I want to create my own. Then I was on a page called Gravatar, which was equally confusing. Either I’m completely incompetent or WP is not easy to use.
I created an Etsy page last month and it was easy as 1-2-3. Very user friendly. WordPress is a whole different level. I’m not sure I’ll be able to have the patience to deal with the learn.wordpress page. I will look at it but I’d appreciate staying in touch with you so I can ask for help or ask to get rid of my subscription.
I’m so disappointed because I’ve been meaning to do this for a year and now that I am finally there I can’t make heads or tails of it. Sorry!
    And thanks. ml

Okay, I am back on and trying again. Here is the biggest problem. I’m a cartoonist and when I try to upload any of my images, there is no clear way to crop them and make them fit the space. Can you help me with this? I am on my public profile page, making some changes. It’s easy to edit my bio. But not easy to place images where you want them. Also, how do I make my image go across my home page where I now see like, an image of the beach?

    Hello? Still needing help.

  • Hi Mary,

Basically I can’t figure out how to create just my basic home page!

Gotcha. So out-of-the-box your WordPress.com site is set up to display the blog on the front page (aka: homepage) of your site. You can change this to display a static page if you like instead. Here is the instructions on how to do that: http://learn.wordpress.com/bonus-round-get-a-home-page/

I found myself at some page that offered all sorts of images for fees around $70. I don’t want those, I want to create my own.

Sounds like you were looking at themes, which are what we use to change the appearance, layout, and functionality of your site. if you are looking for a special homepage layout, a theme is what gives you that, but not all themes cost money. You can find plenty of free themes here: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/free/

I’m a cartoonist and when I try to upload any of my images, there is no clear way to crop them and make them fit the space. Can you help me with this?

In general I recommend cropping images before you upload them, but there is the ability to make small edits (including cropping) to them and you can learn about that here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-editing/

I am on my public profile page, making some changes. It’s easy to edit my bio. But not easy to place images where you want them.

Do you mean this page? http://marylawtonblog.me/about/

The profile info you see there is pulled automatically from your Gravatar profile page, but for more control you can just edit the page (link is in the black admin bar here, and add your own images and text, as outlined here: http://learn.wordpress.com/get-published/#publishpage

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
